Seems Josh Scobee is looking for a new job so now he's saying he actually had a "tweaked" leg for that debacle against Balt.
No one knew about it except him.................uh huh......right...

Just a quick shout out to Coach Butler, Tomlin & Co. before I give my full recap (later)...

Hats off to those guys though. The 2nd half defensive adjustments were HOF worthy. They went from cover 3 to cover 2, took out Blake, put Boykin in the slot, moved Cockrell to Thomas, stopped pulling Shazier for Spence on certain downs, and played tighter pre-snap coverage (varied by snap whether they bailed or pressed but more frequent pressing then the 1st) on early downs. And wow that defense was air tight in the 2nd half. They went from a bottom feeder defense to top 3 easy. Scary how bipolar they can be, but the changes we saw have got to instill a LOT of confidence in the coaching. Not sure who exactly to heap the majority of the praise on, but my initial assumption would be Butler.

Incredible coaching though.

Thoughts on the game.

OFC...I never would have thought a 50+ pass attempt game would beat the Broncos, but I've been wrong before...a few too many 3 and outs for my liking, but in the 2nd half the OL got the shield up around Ben and AB showed why he should be an mvp candidate....the bigs are better than I thought up front for the Broncos, but you still need to attack them more than 14 times. The DEN DL bigs won the 1st half, the Steeler OL and DL won the second. The WR trio is developing into maybe the best in the league.

DEF...Face already noted the half time change in the backfield...imo that was a Butler move, I think it's a Tomlin move that it's not permanent...the rotation has been working okay, but it might be time for him (41) to play in dime only. Pressure by committee works. They had trouble getting off the field in the 1st half, but turned it up in the 2nd...you can see the difference with Shazier in there as opposed to Spence, but Spence needs to keep getting some reps on DEF...I'd like to see him get more blitz chances...maybe that's coming.

A lot more scoring than I expected, a roller coaster, but it was entertaining...especially the 2nd half.

Now that I'm highly caffeinated, here's my recap...

Coaching... As noted before, lots of great halftime adjustments. Not just on D, but the offense came out firing and didn't shy away. I'd pay good money to hear Tomlin's halftime speech. I'm sure the vets all played a huge part in that verbal lashing as well. Not too often do we get to see this coaching staff make drastic adjustments mid game, but they should probably do it more often. Great job all around (minus Danny Smith lol). A

O... As ATL stated, 50+ passing attempts against one of the top pass D's in the league is suicidal. But given the firepower its hard to disagree with it. D-Will didn't get much going, but their D-line dominated most of the 1st half, and the offense primarily passed the ball in the 2nd. Not the greatest of schemes, but when you're hot there isn't much you can mess up. Didn't care for Wallace's PF penalty. That was a dirty cheap shot, and quite honestly embarrassing. I like his passion, but he needs to dial it back a bit. Reminds me of the days when Kemoatu (sp?) was out there jumping into piles. As for Ben... Not his finest hour, but he turned in a few clutch drives when they needed it most. And for that, regardless of INT's, he deserves a lot of praise. O-line struggled, but they were tasked with a tough job. They continued to battle and ended up getting the upper hand. B

D... Already stated the changes. But damn, here's to hoping that last night's game was the final nail to the Blake coffin. The excuse that "they need him in run support because he's the best tackler" doesn't apply anymore after that filthy stiff arm that Thomas dished on him in the RZ. Without tackling skills, he's an even bigger liability (as if that was possible). Time to end that experiment and give Boykin & Cockrell the full time reins. Cockrell got abused in the 1st half, but he's almost always "right there" to make the play. Not much more you can ask when defending players like Sanders & Thomas. Only a few times do you ever see him bite & get burned. He's young & bound to make mistakes. I'm really liking what I've been seeing from the safeties. Their level of play has clearly elevated. I liked seeing Golden rotating with Allen. The D-line played well in the 2nd half. The pressure the front 7 dialed up was suffocating. Still had some troubles with maintaining gap responsibilities so it wasn't a dominating performance like we have seen from this group. B

ST... Boz was 100% on the night. Berry buried them deep a couple times, which was refreshing. Aside from one horrific 30yd punt (got a favorable bounce, but still ugly as shit), he had a good night. Had to shake my head at Shamarko's boneheaded mistake on that punt. Yes his foot was out of bounds, so regardless of that penalty I still think that TD would have been negated. Still, you gotta know the rules better than that. Also knocked this group for W-Johnson's block in the back. He had no business attempting that block. B

Overall... Wasn't pretty, but they finished well. The offense is the best in the league right now, and its not even open for debate. If this defense can put together more than 2 qtrs of solid play then this team is a serious contender. B

Outlook... Huge win for the Steelers. That W leapfrogged the Jets for the 6th seed. I can guarantee you that NOBODY in the playoffs wants to see PIT in the postseason. Still haven't clinched a spot yet, and the AFCN is still open for grabs if Cincy can lose to Baltimore. It's a faint hope lol. Steelers go on the road for their last 2, @BAL & @CLE. Need both wins! If Denver drops 1 more game they will force a 4-way tie with KC, NYJ & PIT. That would give KC the AFCW division crown, and bump the Steelers up to the 5th seed. DEN & NYJ would be fighting for the 6th seed in that scenario because PIT owns the tiebreaker over both. That's assuming PIT, KC & NYJ win out. A lot can happen in the next few weeks! Buckle in, it's going to be a wild ride!

As always, Go Steelers!

Stellar!

Coaches...I agree...not only did the DEF backfield pick it up, the OL blocked better, and the DL got more push. There were a few points in the game where I felt DWill should have gotten carries on 2nd down after a decent 3ish gain on 1st, but they passed and ended up with 3rd and long.

But once the OL started claiming some turf and giving Ben time, PIT WRs were getting separation and moving the ball so I can see why they stuck with it.

OL...I felt they played well considering the lack of balance...playing in retreat mode for nearly 80% of the totally plays against elite level pass rushers makes the job a lot harder...they're going to make some plays.

D...I might go B+ here...they were playing a lot of zone in the 1st half and not really getting Osweiler off his spot much....yes, they got the quick hitter to Sanders (btw congrats on a great effort by him) and 3 sustained drives. In the 2nd half they played more man and the DL started winning in the trenches...27 is still a lot to give up in a half, but zero in the 2nd and almost no sustained drives...that set the table for the comeback...had the D given up any more pts, idt we're talking a win today.

#31...I'm pleased with this kid...he's coachable, the PI calls have cut down...generally in good position, victim of the great throws on a couple...seems to have the right mental makeup to play CB in this league...his next level of development is turning and playing the ball quicker.

ST...maybe a little generous, but they got away with it. That could've been a huge momentum changer...really shows why Shark is not on DEF.

Vegas was right on this one and I was agreeing on the spread, just not the overall... covered, but Allen and Golden should've had picks and the score might have looked more convincing.

I hear Manning wants to play again next year...IMO Osweiler should be the future for the Broncos...OFC was struggling coming in, but 4 or 5 starts, that's to be expected. They can build around him.

Outlook...the win tied NYJ in conference dept, and the next tie breaker is record vs common opponents. Moving up to the 5 would be great...for now...pay back in BAL.

Still need to win tomorrow, combined with the Pats beating the Jets for the Steelers to clinch.

Then we'll talk postseason! :thumb:
