Laughable. Hasselbeck is worse than Smith in just about every category there is at this point. Seriously, this is We Want Carr territory.

I'll be sure to bring this up when Alex Smith gets benched by week 4.

Even if you take those 8 games away from Alex Smith - that puts him down to 11 games missed, only 2 less than Hasselbeck the last three years. Neither is exactly an iron man, but to claim that Alex Smih is more durable than Hasselbeck is just not true.

Oh, you're going back to your original statement I think?

Honestly though, I was being maybe a little too technical on a fine line. You are absolutely correct, this is one of those perception is reality moments.

I'm not going to say Hasselbeck is injury prone, because a hit by Patrick Willis sends him to the bench. That's like saying someone is a bitch for not being able to take a Mike Tyson punch. I'm not going to do it.

I totally get where you're coming from, Alex Smith isn't an ironman. He's only played 3 seasons where an injury hasn't taken him out. 2005, 2006, and 2009 (after he took over). So that leaves, 2007, 2008, 2010 where injuries, and let's be clear that it's always shoulder injuries, have made him miss time. So, just being diplomatic to a sense, it's a 50/50 shot that he won't get injured.

One could even take this information and say, Hasselbeck is less injury prone because he won't have Patrick Willis knocking him out if they're teammates. If they want to be a smartass.

Anywho, I'm babbling, in the end. I would have been happy to have Hass. It's just too bad our offensive line was part of the reason he wanted nothing to do with the 49ers. He loved Harbaugh, Bobby Engram, etc... just wasn't thrilled with our offensive line (by his own words).

He's not any more injury prone than Alex Smith. The last two years Alex Smith missed 10 games, Hasselbeck only 4.

That 10-4 stat may go strongly towards your argument for signing Hass over Smith but you know that it doesn't say much about injury-proneness as you suggest. The first five games of those ten he didn't play because he sucked more than Hill in the offseason competition. Then he missed 2-3 games due to injury and two more because Singletary thought Troy was better. Definitely support for Hass QB wise, but given that a prognosis for a 36 year-old is worse and injury-missed games is 4-2 or 4-3 is nonresponsive. Note: This is going based on your two year window. I'm not arguing with your assessments of the QBs at this time. I'll wait until they both play some games.

Not that I'm defending Smith, but isn't this his 8th new offense? or somewhere close to it?

Sorry, X, I didn't see this question...below is a list of all Alex's and o'line coaches

QB Coaches
2005: Jim Hostler
2006: Pep Hamilton
2007: Frank Cignetti
2008: Ted Tollner
2009: Mike Johnson
2010: Mike Johnson (4 Games)
2011: Geep Chryst

OC's
2005: Mike McCarthy
2006: Norv Turner
2007: Jim Hostler
2008: Mike Martz (Smith dnp under Martz)
2009: Jimmy Raye
2010: Jimmy Raye (4-Games)
2010: Mike Johnson (12-Games)
2011: Greg Roman

O'Line Coaches
2005-2006: George Warhop
2007: Mark Nori
2008-2009: Chris Foerster
2010: Mike Solari
2011: Mike Solari & Tim Drevno

So, essentially Alex has had 6 OC's & 5 QBC's in 7 years. The O'Line has had 5 Coaches during the same period.

Thank you MW, 6 OCs(maybe Raye and MJ were similar?) but still wow. In the Jets vs Texans game I believe they were mentioning how Newton(carolina i know) had all these different OCs and it's tough for him but what would they say about Alex? lol

Geep Chryst? What a unique name....

Yeah, that's quite the turnover in SF yet he still sticks around. As for the OL, i'm not too sure if that's a big deal, considering we have new guys. Staley being the most "vet" of them all.

Edit: Changed Alex's number of years to 6 from 7

YW.

(Disclaimer: I am not defending Smith's performance)

Yes, it is tough to have coaching changes, and the more you have the tougher it is.

I listed the QB Coaches because this fact gets lost in the discussion about how many OC's Alex has had. QB Coaches are the ones who mess with a QB's mechanics. At this point I am surprised Smith isn't throwing between his legs!

Geep Chryst? I know it sounds like something you would have for breakfast.

Please note I changed Smith's number of years from 7 to 6. So it is, 6 OC's in 6 Years.

Side note: It will be interesting to see how Bradford handles a new OC in St. Louis.

Although the O'Line has an impact on the QB when it comes to protections, I see your point.

I don't think Hasselbeck would have been a better option than Smith. At least Smith still has some youth to him. Hasselbeck has experience but most of his success came when he was younger and had loads of tallent around him. I know its hard to stomach, but we need to give Smith a chance with Harbaugh running the show.

Valid point about the QBs coach as usual. The change in mechanics must be tiredsome for Smith. But at the same time as a competitor one would think he would got that part down.

It might be more of a confidence thing and mental stopwatch with him.
