No joke, that would not surprise me.

On a side note, with the Flyers allegedly being involved, what does that mean for Bob? Trade time?

I'm not sure they move Bob yet.

Bryz certainly seemed to show that he's not the answer for the Flyers, but it was only one year, and there's no way on Earth they can move his contract right now.

I think Bob stays as the backup for this year.

It's just interesting to see that they may be shopping. Bob's a great young netminder, so he should have a decent amount of value.

Bryz seemed to look a little bit better in the NJ series than the Pgh one. If I were a Philly fan, I'd feel fine with him there. It's not like though types of series happen more than once. I guess that's kind of the way I feel about Fleury. There was no defense for either team.

I dont think I like this move.

Then again, I was also pissed when the Pens signed Comrie thinking it was a pretty solid pick up. :)

Yeah, I'm just not sure what taking away Bryz' only legit competition does. I think that's why they would have been interested in Vokoun is to give Bryz a much-needed kick in the pants.

If he's got nothing but an AHL-er on the bench behind him, he strikes me as a player who is going to get complacent in a hurry knowing that a) they can't pull him and b) he's got a huge paycheck coming.

I'm assuming that they'll be shopping for more than just Vokoun. If they planned on keeping Bry and Bob on the roster, then why even waste time looking at another 1-way netminder?

"The #Leafs were interested in Vokoun but weren’t willing to commit to a contract prior to July 1."

and with Vokoun off the market, the supply of #1 capable goalies shrunk.
Come on, Bri-bri.... time to overpay for Luongo. No need to worry about contract :thumb:

Funny. All day the local media has been saying that Nash as going to go to the Caps and Vokoun would certainly be a part of it. Sign and deal kind of thing. With Semin and one of the young D men.

This is why I pay no mind to the local media.

good chance he does get traded.. a lot of people seem to think he's not cut out for a backup role, rendering him kinda useless on the flyers team.. i think they'll deal him for something minor (3rd rd pick maybe?) if they can get it.. give him the opportunity elsewhere

He went from the usual "goalie of the future" to a "what's his name again?" in record time.

I personally thought he had a great rookie year, and an experienced vet should have been brought in to groom him-not to go out and get someone to replace him.

To clarify the trade during the playoffs issue a few pages back, the trade deadline is the final day a team can make a trade for a player and have that player remain eligible for the current year's playoffs. Any trades made after the deadline complete as normal, and the traded players are even eligible to play with the team in the regular season (so a team can qualify for the playoffs with a late addition, but not use him in the playoffs themselves, oddly enough).

So the only time trades don't happen is the freeze then? I guess that makes sense. What I figured. Tends to stay quiet until after the postseason wraps up though. Honestly, the backup goalie was the biggest hole in the Pens roster. They're not going to be bringing in any big names this offseason, that's just not part of the plan. This is the biggest move, outside of resigning Sid and Staal, that they'll likely make. I could see a trade RE: Staal, but after that peak in the rumor mill, I honestly don't think that's what Shero and management wants though. If someone calls them with a ridiculous deal at the draft, than sure, but Shero isn't trading him for someone in the future...it's either an NHL ready impact player, or nothing.

I like the move. Johnson was brutal last year, and maybe Fleury was overplayed. This gives us a nice option to rest Fleury a lot more, and even go with Vokoun if he gets hot. It puts some general pressure on Fleury to maintiain his starter's job, but at the same time, a bit of pressure off that he can have a bad game here and there, knowing there's a more than capable backup in the wings.

Also, it's an aggressive move for Shero, so I think he knows something about signing Crosby / Staal or trading Martin / Staal that the public doesn't.

I realize it's a bit much for a backup, but in my mind the Pens weren't going to make a big splash in FA without moving much more salary than the extra, say, $1million he cost them. And it's an extra $1million well worth it. I really do hope that Martin moves. I'm sure he'd be fine elsewhere, but he can't be in this system making that money.

FWIW:

Pens roster:

11 F (bargains for adams, jeffery and vitale)
6 D
2 G (bargains for engelland, lovejoy)

8.7 mil in cap space

This leaves plenty of space to fill 4-5 depth holes, IMO.

what a surprise. :tsk:
