I think MAF's play against Philly said all that needed to be said about their confidence in him.

They can make all the public statements they want, but nobody was going to believe them after watching that series.

seems like an entire season ago doesnt it.

Yeah, but if they're in the SCF, they obviously don't need as much help.

They have to block it because otherwise you'd see NJ or LA offering a small fortune for Suter or Lidstrom or any number of other top name guys that are out of the POs at this point.

I think if they wanted to allow the teams still in it to make trades for next year, they'd have to specifically address it in the CBA that if the guy is on a team that doesn't make the POs or gets eliminated, he can't play then in the current season again regardless of who he gets traded to.

is this 100% correct?

isnt any team able to make a trade post trade deadline? at any time even during the playoffs?

if the Kings or Devils made a trade that player just wouldnt be eligible for playoffs

and other teams rarely trade during the playoffs because its an unwritten league thing to try not to make big headlines that take away from the playoff story lines

Im not 100% sure

I just wonder what goalie we will get with that 7th round draft pick that will ultimately be our starter heading into the 2015 playoffs.

I'm not 100% either. Maybe it's just that unwritten that causes it to never happen.

Contract for Tomas Vokoun. 2 years / 4 million total.

that's a heck of a lot more than just "sittin' on the bench" money. interesting.

Hopefully, the Canucks trade with the Leafs will work out better than the most recent Flames trade with the Leafs...
I think the key is to get players (or picks) young enough that they have been infected by incurable Leaf-itis.
Also, don't bring a shitload of Leafs over, so they can't bring their 'culture' with them.

His pay got him a pay increase? okay...

It's only a $500K pay increase and he came to you guys at an extremely (almost unheard of) large discount. I think that has more to do with it than his play last season.

As for the Pens confidence (or lack thereof) in MAF, I think this is kind of like buying car insurance for your 18 year old kid. He's had some really good days and really bad days behind the wheel.....but it doesn't hurt to get insured.

Keep in mind that both Bryz and Fleury had an aweful series there. They did however have great regular seasons. Fleury also played very well in last year's playoffs. I don't think it has much to do with him, it has more with the Penguins not being able to rest him enough.

It was mentioned earlier I think this says it best, Brent Johnson starts felt like an automatic loss as times.

speak for yourselves :(

i'm sure you remember better than i do, but i seem to remember fleury's stats in the last 3 playoff trips as being sub-par (stats dont always tell the story though).. i think 4706 posted the numbers in some thread

Fleury played a very solid series last year against the Lightning. Keep in mind that the stats will usually favor more defensive-minded teams. The Penguins are not one of them (obviously, heh). He'll see less shots for the most part, but he sees a lot more odd-man counter-attacks.

I don't hear too many Flyers fans proclaiming confidence in Bryz though.

MAF has been sub .900 sv% in the POs all three seasons since the Cup win and looked downright embarrassing this year in the POs. Regular season stats are fine, but with the way he's been the last few years, if people weren't clinging to the nostalgia of his Cup winning season, he'd probably be out of town or riding the pine already.

We may have to agree to disagree on that.

I would have picked inconsistent if I had one adjective to describe it. He was great in games 1 and 7, but I thought he looked shaky in a couple others and was downright bad in a couple games too.

This move is merely to give MAF some time off when needed. He's not a top 5 goalie in the league, not right now...but you guys are not giving him much credit at all. Yes, this postseason sucked, but the stats don't do much about last few postseasons (excluding the Flyers series).

Also: for people who think that this would tick off MAF: they both have the same agent, Allan Walsh, who I doubt would tell his veteran guy (who doesn't make him as much money as his younger guy) to go to a team where he'd tick off on of his bigger clients.

That's fine. When watching that series, MAF and Jordan Staal were the players that I thought had really shined.

I obviously am not one the fans that is going to say that he's above the Henrik Lundqvists and Pekka Rinnes, but I do still consider him a franchise player.

Also, MAF was the only reason the Pens even sniffed the postseason.
