Also: for people who think that this would tick off MAF: they both have the same agent, Allan Walsh, who I doubt would tell his veteran guy (who doesn't make him as much money as his younger guy) to go to a team where he'd tick off on of his bigger clients.

interesting.. you'd think Walsh would want both of them to be starting, or at least competing for a starting job (not against eachother).. he must really feel vokoun wasn't going to get that opportunity.. i would've thought otherwise, but i'm sure he knows better than i do

He saw it coming, but he still couldn't stop it.

:behindsofa:

Vokoun through the five hole.....

Seriously I understand the need for good goaltending but 7 million tied to two goalies and still have Paul Martin under contract. I will be an interesting offseason.

I guess I never really weighed in on how I feel about this move. I think it's fine, but it's not as big a splash as what still needs to happen. The price tag is higher than I'd want on a backup goalie. We could have tried giving Thieson (sp?) some more time with the big club to develop at a much lower cost. I guess what I mean is that the Penguins seem to be right up against the cap, so this was kind of risky.

On the topic of what the Penguins gave up, the 7th round pick. That seemed like a steal to me. Very rarely do 7th rounders make an impact in the NHL.

Maybe he's just looking for a ring before retirement. As bad as the post-season was this year, they'll still be one of the favorites going into next season. Ala Marian Hossa - if at first you don't succeed, try another team.

I was talking about 2010-11 season. Sans Sid and Geno. And you know, everyone else.

Hey we had the triumphant return for Kovy! (I can't find an emote that demonstrates how I feel about that..)

The Caps weren't going to re-sign him, so a 7th rounder is better than nothing. Clearly Holtby-Neuvirth is their tandem going into next year.

And the Pens get an adequate backup if Vokoun plays like he did this year and a guy who is better than MAF and a potential great starting goalie if he plays as he has in the past. For $2 million per, that's not a bad deal. That said, I think Vokoun's best days are behind him. But you never know (see: Thomas, Roloson).

Rumors say that the Leafs and Flyers were also in on this, with both willing to give the term, but Pens had best opp/money.

Good point. That is my only thought why he would waive his no trade clause now because correct me if I am wrong he would be a FA in a few weeks anyway to sign where he wants.

Also the Caps got a 7th round draft pick for a player they were going to not retain anyway. So that part is good for them knowing all too well 7th rounders barely make an impact in the NHL.

The Leafs wouldn't offer more than a 7th-round pick?! Even if they matched it, the Penguins 7th round pick will probably come after the Leafs.

I hope I didn't just jinx them.

I think the 7th was probably the same from all teams, but the money offered to Voukon was better. They basically let him choose and see what team offered him the best deal, and then worked out the trade details. They gave him clearance to talk to teams.

Yeah, even if nothing else, it gives them a 7th rounder they could package into another trade deal.

And you never know what you might pull out of there. One of the Kostitsyns was a 7th rounder (Sergei I think, too lazy to check) and you can find some good grinders/role guys down there too.

I'm sure Burke will give a presser in the next couple of days on how they could have had him if they wanted but the price was too high.

Isn't that against the rules since FA season isn't open?

I thought that was the whole point of trading the rights to the player, since you're not allowed to talk to him otherwise.

Oh yeah you can get a diamond in the ruff. I am thinking it is low risk from the round stand point.

Don't forget that same draft the last pick was Hornqvist, you are correct about Kostitsyn.....

No joke, that would not surprise me.

On a side note, with the Flyers allegedly being involved, what does that mean for Bob? Trade time?

I like it. As someone else pointed out, vokoun always seemed to play well against Pittsburgh. At least he is an ally, now. I don't mind the price as Tomas has some pedigree.
