So the dolphins save a little under 3 million on Vernon. Is that worth potentially losing him?

So 10 guys got tagged:

Exclusive Tag:
Denver: Von Miller-OLB

*Received the only Exclusive Francise Tag and reportably the first time it has been used on a non-QB since 2007. This means that he cannot negotiate with anyone else and has no real option but to stay with the Broncos next year. However the downside is that it also means that Brock O. and Malik Jackson will be UFA and could very likely be gone.

Non-Exclusive Tags:
Washington: Cousins-QB
Buffalo: Glenn-OT
Carolina: Norman-CB
NYJ: Wilkerson- DE
LA Rams: Johnson- CB
Chicago: Jeffery- WR

*So this means that each of the teams saves a few million off of the exclusive franchise tag number, but allows the player to negotiate elsewhere with two 1st round picks as compensation if the team holding the rights decides not to match.

Transition Tag:
Miami: Vernon- DE

*This tag means that the teams again saves more $$ versus the non-exclusive franchise tag but receives no compensation if they decide not to match the contract offer sheet.

At this point both KC: Berry-S, and Baltimore: Tucker-K, have also been tagged but it has not been reported which tag has been given. I would assume that Berry receives the non-exclusive and Tucker gets either the non-exclusive or the transition tag.

Previously teams such as San Francisco (Hampton in 1996) and Minnesota (Hutchinson in 2005) circumvented the transition tag by making ridiculous contract demands that the team owning the player's rights could not match (ie: "Poison Pill"), but this was halted in 2011 when the NFL changed the wording of the rule to state:

"No Offer Sheet may contain a Principal Term that would create rights or obligations for the Old Club that differ in any way (including but not limited to the amount of compensation that would be paid, the circumstances in which compensation would be guaranteed, or the circumstances in which other contractual rights would or would not vest) from the rights or obligations that such Principal Term would create for the Club extending the Offer Sheet (i.e., no 'poison pills')."

The bigger issue is that any of the Non-Exclusive Tag players and the Transition Tag player could all end up on other teams next year. Particularly Miami: Vernon- DE who can probably get a major offer from a team like Jacksonville or Oakland who have HUGE amounts of cap space.

If one of the aforementioned teams throws a big number at Vernon, it is a strong possibility that Miami cannot match.
