I love Craw. He is one of my favorite Giants ever (top 5, probably).

But is he the greatest SS in Giants history? That monicker has been thrown at him as an absolute unquestioned fact a lot the last couple years.

But I think that is false. And it really isn’t even that close.

Jackson was a BEAST. The problem is that he played in NY. But it wasn’t in the 1800s. Why is he a complete unknown? He needs more love.

I wonder who else has talked about him recently? Name sounds slightly familiar.

He got on my radar only about 5 or 6 years ago. I have heard his name mentioned in very brief passing on the radio a few times, but never as the focus of whatever was being discussed.

Jackson, George Davis, Rich Aurilia, …

Maybe Speier or Omar or Uribe…

I think the top four are Jackson, Davis, Aurilia and Craw. Am I missing anyone?

I would agree with your top 4. I ranked Davis higher but I know you don't like players from the 1800s.

I forgot about that thread. Great re-read.

I forgot about it too until I saw you mention Jackson. To be honest, I didn't really know anything about him until I did my research.
Every once in a while, this board puts up some journalistic-level quality discussions. That thread may be one of them.

It's Jackson and Fletcher as 1 and 1a, then Craw.

Nobody else really close.

I can see Fletcher in the discussion. But not sure you can have a discussion without Davis.

I could go Jackson/Davis, Craw, Aurilia, Fletcher.

I stand corrected. I forgot Davis. He's in tier 1 with Jax and Fletch

Then Craw

Then everybody else. Aurilia/Dark/Speier/Bartell...

Fletch being the best defender of the bunch.

Did you watch him play? How do you know he was the best defender? I wouldn’t trust any news stories from the day because they were just flowery stories told by “newsies”.

I was really impressed when Rich Aurilia won the silver slugger award. Because of his comment/speech . His comment was something like "it's a good thing I don't play in the American league". That's class.

Is it too soon to add DeJong to the list of greatest shortstops in franchise history?
