i know of a company that does a billion in sales, and it's back-up data is stored on the same server as the original content.
forget same city, forget same building... same server.
they recently got ransomed, and were utterly fucked. It was only the very very few folks who independently backed up their own shit what weren't completely locked down for a week+

i believe the IT manager still has his job.

If you ever interview for a large company that handles sensitive data, one question to ask is what is your DR strategy (keep it simple) and see what type of response you get.

1. If they are like fort knox you probably will want to work there if you want to have the same job for an extended period of time. Pretty comfortable living.
2. If they state we are working on a strategy but are in the process of figuring out. That is a company you can come into and move up pretty quickly. There will be risk involved.
3. If they respond "what's that?" .....run ...run away very fast.
