Hopefully some team (like IND maybe) takes these PFF ratings seriously and offers up some for him.

Another guy that could garner some interest with a good day of work vs CAR is Jerald Hawkins.

CB...Brian Allen was finally put out of his misery in PIT....waived injured.

The QB2 battle was fun to watch this year. Actually made the preseason more interesting than usual. That and seeing James Washington look like the second best WR on the team. Rudolph has looked very good. Shocking I know, seeing as how that was another draft pick that I poo-pooed. Clearly, the Steelers should hire me as a scout.

I'm just glad it's over and no significant injuries...curious what they end up doing on a couple of fronts tomorrow.

QB...do they keep the better QB3 option (Hodges) and put him on the PS and let Dobbs go/trade?

RB...Edmunds has probably been the better player, but can he beat Snell?...I tend to doubt it

OLB...with Ola still recovering, and Chick a little banged up, Skipper has to make it...right?

WR...can they find a trade partner for Rogers and get another TE option?

CB...they have made me eat my words it appears...Burns will make this team

S...Marcus Allen or Dangerfield?

I think they'll keep three quarterbacks myself. Snell they seem to like, but I've not seen anything from him myself. Would Edmunds end up on the PS if Snell makes it?

Skipper has to make it.

I have a feeling they're going to keep Dobbs, and try to get him to the PS. Seems like Hodges would be a better QB3 though.

I'm okay with Snell given he's the 3rd guy, but doesn't seem to have much lateral quickness...those power plays with the pulling G seems more like his cup of tea to me. As an UDFA the thought process might be that he would clear waivers and they could stash him on the PS....maybe they think Snell might not clear waivers and he's a 4th rd pick.

Skipper is basically a lock now with 2 OLBs nicked up....the bigger question is does he stick when Ola is ready to comeback? I hope so.

At this point, I'd take Hodges over Dobbs. Mason was the clear #2 all preseason long. Would like to see Griffey get a spot as well.

sutton smith gone

diontae spencer too

only ones of note

I think most people felt Rogers would make it...only going with 5 WRs is a bit of surprise too.

10 LBs...made sense with Skipper and UG3 making good showings...I kept trying to tell my golf buddie Steeler fan that Dirty Red was a lock.

Moving up a round in the trade with Bucs looks mundane on the surface, but we know he wasn’t making it, so essentially moved an excess player and got something for him...not bad.

Final 53 thoughts.

I still think they find a way to get Holton back or should. Dangerfield sticking over Marcus Allen was not surprising, but showed they want to keep some vets on STs that have embraced that role...ala Dirty Red.

Looks like Allen and Edmunds are sticking around, I can imagine the both of them are the first to be activated if/when an injury occurs.
Also Diontae Spencer was signed by the Broncos.

Signed to practice squad:

Things had to have gotten ugly for Hawkins. Kinda strange how he went from camp darling for 2 years running to being beat out by Banner, of whom none of us had penciled in for the 53 all offseason. Still don’t know if that is a good thing that Banner stuck around, but i’ll hope so.

And definitely a big kudos to Kev for getting something out of nothing.

I wouldn't be surprised if they turned around and resigned Eli Rogers back onto the 53. I get the feeling that their roster moves aren't done yet and they are actively shopping someone that they retained. Just looking at how they kept 5 WRs... IIRC the Steelers were a top 2 team in the amount of 5-WR sets that they ran last year. Ben loves that package in the no-huddle. 1 injury puts a kibosh on that entire offensive package, unless they envision guys like Grimble & Gentry being capable of filling those spots. If they fail to achieve the trade they want then I imagine that 1 of the LBers will have to go. Last year they kept 8 LBs, I believe. So this year's 10 is a tough number. If I had to make a cut there then I'm looking at Dirty Red or Chick.

Steelers bring back WR Johnny Holton to practice squad | TribLIVE.com

Looks like Holton was brought back.
Also Kevin Rader was released, wonder if a TE move is coming?
Nothing against Jones or Holton, but not bringing back Diontae Spencer seems like a bad trade-off to me. Especially after cutting Eli Rogers. Spencer would make a great scout team return specialist to improve the cover teams (which have been suspect at best over the years under Danny Smith). And I'd feel confident in calling up Spencer to the 53 in wake of an injury.

The armchair GM in me says to cut Matakevich, resign Eli Rogers. Assuming no trades are made. Then drop Jones & sign Spencer to the PS. IMO that makes the roster considerably more dynamic.
