I guess I disagree, but not vehemently. He's a 3.0 WAR pitcher who will give you a 110 ERA+ and 200+ innings a year. He's a #2/#3 pitcher and if all he costs is money, $18/year is fair for 3.0 WAR.

He's owed $21 million in 2016-17-18, with a $16 million club option in 2019 ($2 million buyout)

So if the Giants signed him (and no cash from the Maxi's), he'd cost minimum $65 million for 3 years, or $81 million for four years.

It does seem inevitable that the Dodgers will eventually succeed in buying a championship. If they win a bunch of them, then I think you'll start seeing pressure on the commissioner and other owners to institute a salary cap.
In the long run I don't think you can buy a WS but I do think you can buy a playoff team. Living in NY I saw the NYY do that for something like 18 of 20 years. Still wasn't enough to win the WS though. To get through the playoffs you need some sense of luck and some people have to have the 18 games of the lives. Bum was a real good example last year. Bum is good but when he hit the playoffs last year he was just not hittable. A once in a lifetime performance but enough to get us a 3rd title .... I just don't think you can buy that ...

Well he is very young, and some just seem to have an affinity for pressure situations, so we shall see…

Panda also seemed to thrive in the playoffs.

The big thing, though, is that they did not acquire a manager in this trade, so they are still stuck with Donnie Baseball.
 My coworkers wish he would go away.

Per Pavlovic, Beast not coming to SF. Didn't pursue him last offseason because he's not a roster fit and now he's not an obvious upgrade over Max. I imagine if he doesn't get a ML offer anywhere, he'd take a minor league deal with us.

I just thought of this now, so it is not fully worked out yet, but with Magic at the helm, is he trying to put the Lakers on the field at the Letrine?

The lakers have had 2 major coaches in the last 35 years. Riley and Jackson. They were big personalities that were there to manage big personalities. Mattingly brings a lot of respect to the clubhouse from his playing days, and the Didgers are trying to acquire a superstar at every position. An Xs and Os guy is not who you want for THAT team. You need Phill Jackson. You need Pat Riley. Magic thinks you need Dan Mattingly.

The problem with this is that baseball is not basketball. In basketball, the better team will win 85% of the time. In baseball, the better team wins 55% of the time. Streaks are much more pronounced in baseball since the greatest players to ever play the game fail 70% of the time. The greatest players in baseball had to ride a bus for 3 years in the minors.

Baseball is not basketball.

I'd love for the Giants to save some funds and make a run at Price/Cueto/Greinke. Not sure if Sheilds is the answer.

We probably need Leake (who does he replace in the rotation, Hudson?), because the Dodgers starting five is probably the best 1-5 in baseball now: Kershaw, Greinke, Anderson, Latos, Wood

Their bullpen may doom them but Chapman is still out there....

As mentioned above, eventually they will buy themselves one.

Giants get Leake for "2 minor leaguers".

I always dread wondering who it will be we're giving up, but I like Leake a lot.

Leake is averaging 6.5 innings per start, is a groundball pitcher, and he's a pretty solid hitter. Great guy for the clubhouse, and he grew up a Giants fan FWIW. Giants may have the best hitting staff in the NL. Bum/Heston/Leake/Cain

Mella has a live arm and I have little doubt he pitches is the majors, but will it be in the Pen or the rotation? And I've documented concerns about his injury risk (the inverted W, or the M, just for you Maysfan).
