average is awful when compared to the greats... It would be interesting to see which teams had those below .330 OBPs at lead off, and see how many of those teams were in the top half of teams scoring though...

If the standard were using is "the greats" then I should be allowed to use a "great" #4 hitter in the exercise as well though, no?

Now, onto a bigger point....Eric Davis was a better player than 2/3 of this list and it's a damn shame his tragic injury kept him from accumulating a dork stat such as WAR. I saw Mike Cameron and Davis play. No comparison. NONE.

Cameron has a better career WAR largely because he was much better defensive player.

Davis had six seasons with 502+ plate appearances. Never played more than 135 games. Hell, J.D. Drew had 7 seasons with 135+ games.

But you gotta respect Davis for how he "ended" his career.

Anyone who "kills" themselves during the World Series has my full respect.

I understand Davis played after '90, but that dive removed him from the list of elite players in the game. He was just a journeyman after that series.

17 seasons and 1626 games so 95.7 games played per season. Davis was good when on the field, but he couldn't stay on the field.

No, he wasn't.

Sure he was.

There's a reason why Davis played more than 40% of his career defensive innings in the corner outfield....because there was a better option to play CF, particularly after his knees started to go in his late 20s which greatly affected his speed.

Wrong. It's because the astroturf fucked him up. You're out of your depth here.

Which hurt his speed...which hurt his range and hence defensive abilities.

It's really that simple.

Doesn't matter WHY his defense was affected. It WAS.

Just like it doesn't matter that he essentially sacraficed his career (and his life, potentially) with that dive in '90. He was not the same player after, so he does not belong on any "best ever" lists. That's why it is so hard to be a "best ever". Not only do you have to be OMG good, but you have to avoid injuries as well.

Very close. A good case can be made for either. I went a bit outside the box for my tiebreaker. All-time team, neither would be my starting CF, so which would I rather have at the top of my bench? For that question, I take Lofton and it's not even close.
