I think even without the stink Clemens is 12 or 13 for me

Honestly my biggest issue with the whole list is Koufax. If thats Trout or heck even Ott or Nap thats better
Very much agree on Koufax. Seemed to be the biggest whiff on the rankings but when I consider some of the other rankings on the internet, this one I think we did pretty well on.

@calsnowskier , you did a great job on this. Thank you for taking the time to allow a bunch of us to debate the greats of this game. One thing this reinforced to me is that they have been a lot of really good players and I've overlooked some of them. I've sat down and read baseball encyclopedias on the history of the game and still didn't realize how good some players have been.
I have seen these lists my whole life. But until you actually get down in the muck, you can’t really bring your own opinion to a topic like this. Further, I learned about a lot of the older guys that I wasn’t really aware of. Walter Johnson, Rogers Hornsby, Tris Speaker, Lefty Grove, Honus Wagner and Oscar Charleston, just to name a few.

Time VERY well spent.

I would put this ranking above probably any list I have ever seen.

I think Gehrig gets WAY too much ‘story credit”. I think Hornsby or Clemens would have been better there.

Sure. Gehrig has the story that increased his value. But he was also a unicorn. For being such a post season stud. If not the best post season offensive player of all time.

And as we know unicorns in general are difficult to place.

Aaron is a unicorn as welll( does this overuse of the term unicorn lessen the unicorn value??).

I’d say the 5 biggest unicorns in MLB history
(Not in order)

1. Hank Aaron- his elite prime longevity

2. Sandy Koufax- 5 year span, but those five years made him one of the most accomplished pitchers of all time including having the most triple crowns in baseball history

3. Ohtani- best 2 way player( at the same time)of all time

4. Lou Gehrig- best offensive player in post season history.

5. Rickey Henderson- best base runner of all time.

A few thoughts:

-The top 10 looks about right.
-Rickey Henderson is way too high
-ARod is a piece of shit, but should have been ranked higher
-Clemens looks about right to me
-Griffey probably a bit too high
-Strange that no active player made the top 30(although Kershaw, Trout and Ohtani were probably going to get their numbers called soon)
-Koufax was absurdly high, IMO

Here is the final time period breakdown chart:

Looks like the time periods of 1876-1904, 1946-1950, 1977-1985 and 2010-present were not well stocked with players that the majority thought were Top 30 players.
