But if he never plays again, and we can only look at the back of his baseball card, and nothing else is ever added to it, do you still rate him this high?

Is he fun to watch? Absolutely. So was Rickey. So was Barry. But their books are complete. We know the full context of their stories. We don’t know the full context of Shohei yet.

he is a lot like Willie Mays in the sense that some of his specialness is OFF the field reasons... now of course those reasons are totally different,...

even though Ohtani is not the first Japanese player in MLB, not even first future HOFer... and sure Ichiro had his own huge fanbase... but the Ohtani marketing is just unreal...

not sure whether that should affect how we rank, but I do think outside factors matter... and I do think we have over-rated players we have voted for already based on outside reasons... I guess some have been pushed down and not voted for too...

Lets go super small sample sizes..

Pujols vs Clemens: .308. 8 singles. 4 walks. 2 Strikeouts. 1 RBI in 26 ABs
Pujols vs Johnson: .471. 5 HRs. 2 Doubles. 1 Strikeout. 11 RBIs in 17 ABs

I have no idea if these stats are correct.

All I know is if I'm managing to win the world series and I have Maddux, Johnson, and Clemens. Clemens would pitch the 3rd game.

I will admit its probably not fair to ding Johnson if Pujols did have those stats against him. Pujols did extend his career a little bit just because he was a righty that could smoke fastballs. He probably never gets that chance at a last year of accumulation without that.

If we're talking primes:

ERA+: Maddux > Clemens > Johnson
FIP: Johnson > Clemens > Maddux
WHIP: Maddux > Johnson > Clemens

Their primes are about as close as any 3 players can be. It would ultimately come down to how important strikeouts were to you and...yeah, I can kinda see the argument for Johnson

But then why aren't we all voting for Pedro?

It will be interesting to see what happens to his pitching prowess moving forward. He isn’t going to get the chance to go to the minors for a couple months and find his pitching again the way other post-TJ pitchers do. He will not have a SINGLE rehab start. Not one. How will he recover properly?

this is why I am not a huge fan of the 2-way player. There are just too many distractions to maintain any kind of elite level of play.
I would guess that the Dodgers will slowly use him in bullpen, simulated games and other things in spring training and then just throw him out in bullpen spots when they think he is ready to pitch in MLB games (seems to be May according to Roberts). Who knows how his rehab will go but we'll find out soon enough.

Oh, off the field reasons for Mays??? I remember defense being a big reason for Mays being where he was and the discussion that he lost some playing time due to war. Is that the off the field reasons you are talking about?

Seeing as he can enter exit the game without being taken out of the lineup, why not? He can even be used a ROOGY using the Ohtani-rule.

Maybe a conversation to have soon: who is the best African-american league player?

If I was in charge Id just cut it down to 3 but maybe thats why im not in charge
I generally look to advance the top 150% from the nomination phase. Sometimes I cut a bit short, but I try not to cut WAY short.

There is a strong argument for just advancing the top 3 in this one, but if all the 6s converge on one player, that player all the sudden becomes a serious player this round. And again, requiring a 50+1 to “win”, it doesn’t really hurt to have an extra phase.

Probably a 3-man race between Charleston, Gibson and Paige.
I've been to the NL Museum in KC and they seem to give the impression that I got was that Gibson was the guy. I personally am under the assumption its Paige.

Yet this poll puts it clearly on Charleston.

Is there a way on baseball reference or fangraphs or something to cut off the last few seasons of a player and see the total OPS, OPS+, etc. for only the years you are looking at?

If a player played 10 years, but you only want to see an 8 consecutive year period, click the first year, then the final year and a pop up will appear with all the rate stats
