If a touchdown was needed to win he may very well have scored that. If a field goal wins the game you kick a field goal.

Couple things on this little gem.

1. The Colts won the 2006 divisional round game by the score of 15-6 with 5 field goals by Adam Vinatieri. If he doesn't make those kicks, Manning doesn't even go to the Super Bowl let alone winning it. That is what I meant by Manning needed him as well.

2. I'm quite aware of all the scores. Super Bowl 36, sure I'll give you that one. Although even if he misses the kick, the game isn't over.

3. Super Bowl 38, the only reason Brady "needed" Vinatieri is because Vinatieri had missed two field goals earlier in the game. Brady threw for over 350 yards and 3 TDs, yet it was Brady that needed Vinatieri?

4. Super Bowl 39, Vinatieri's 22 yard field goal gave the Patriots a 10-point lead. Brady threw 2 TDs with a QB rating over 110 in that game, yet it was Brady that needed Vinatieri? The guy made a 22-yard field goal that every kicker in the world would make.

So yeah, you're point is idiotic.
