If they are to have any integrity at all, they have to react to the situation (and do so in a manner that allows them to be decisive) rather than react to the public perception of it. If they are just going to play the PR game, they might as well announce that their actions are to be controlled by others.

I agree with the principle, however this is also a billion dollar business and understanding your customer base is critical.
