He also said his new boy-friend talked him into it. it was something about finishing on top....
No, it shows you just don't understand WAR and fail to take playing time into account. It's a cumulative stat. Utley has 10.7 less career WAR than Jeter, but Jeter has almost twice as many career plate appearances.
Maybe but I'm not so sure how much better devotees understand it.
Derek Jeter ranks high in WAR because he hit pretty well for a SS but, at absolute best, the defensive metrics in WAR are highly questionable and he was actually a terrible defensive SS. Despite his poor on-field play, he gets the same positional adjustments as Ozzie Smith and Omar Visquel. So, effectively, he gets a +7.5 runs for being a terrible SS while Keith Hernandez gets a -12.5 for being arguably the best defensive 1B.
When you get right down to it, Derek Jeter has a high WAR because he was good looking enough in a major media market to become the face of the franchise and league. He hasn't played SS all these years because of his defensive prowess anymore then he continues to hit in the 2 hole because he's just crushing the ball these days.
They'll probably cut up the tarp into little pieces and sell that too.
And bottles of "official" bronx/yankee stadium rainwater perhaps?
I wonder which retirement gift he likes the most, maybe the cowboy boots from the Rangers?
Probably. And I'm sure the kayak that the Rays gave him will come in very handy in New York City.
