I'm glad the regular season is almost over. MLB has treated Jeter all year like he invented the game. Which is odd seeing as how nobody in their right mind would ever seriously say that Jeter is the greatest Yankee of all time. Bye-bye Jeter...can't say I'm gonna miss ya!

No, it shows you just don't understand WAR and fail to take playing time into account. It's a cumulative stat. Utley has 10.7 less career WAR than Jeter, but Jeter has almost twice as many career plate appearances.

Derek Jeter ranks high in WAR because he hit pretty well for a SS but, at absolute best, the defensive metrics in WAR are highly questionable and he was actually a terrible defensive SS. Despite his poor on-field play, he gets the same positional adjustments as Ozzie Smith and Omar Visquel. So, effectively, he gets a +7.5 runs for being a terrible SS while Keith Hernandez gets a -12.5 for being arguably the best defensive 1B.

When you get right down to it, Derek Jeter has a high WAR because he was good looking enough in a major media market to become the face of the franchise and league. He hasn't played SS all these years because of his defensive prowess anymore then he continues to hit in the 2 hole because he's just crushing the ball these days.

I always knew he was a bit over-rated statistically, but the Olbermann piece was eye popping.


Cue the Yankees fans with:


---- meant more than statistics
---- intangible value
---- leadership and grace


That is all fine, but Jeter is being treated with a ridiculous victory lap that likely cost his team.


If he had all the grace, intangible, and leadership skills he would have stepped down and stopped costing his team wins this season with bumbling ineptitude.


At the very worst, he should be hitting #8 or #9 and DHing more than playing the field.


Leadership and Intangibles are sort of being replaced by selfishness in 2014.

Sure, why not? You'll never see a bigger Jeter fan than me I find this whole thing amusing. On one side there's idiots saying Jeter is among the best players ever.....when he's not top 5 on his own team. And on the other side are the equally stupid morons who thing he's an average player.
