Then I am a bit disappointed. Pretty sure they wanted a more offensive coach than Tippet which is why they didn't get him, but at this point I don't know which type of coach I'd want.

As forwards coach for the Devils, he produced a mediocre PP and none of our centers could win faceoffs, so I'm not really sure what his job was for us. PDB is the reason for the forecheck so Oates can't get credit there. Maybe he'll produce more when he's given free reign?

@RenLavoieRDS: Alexander Ovechkin called Adam Oates. OV: "it's not bloking the shots and dump and chase anymore."

These guys have had more style changes in the past few years...my word.

I really have no idea how to gauge the move. I like Oates and I'm glad they are looking at how they can score more goals, b/c the offense has been a real problem for a while now. Hunter drilled into their head the importance of physical play and the players have gotten that lesson I think. But their offense HAS to be better, especially with this roster and the defenseman were completely underutilized in Hunter's system which neither transitioned quickly nor fought to hold the offensive zone at the line.

So, I'm hopeful Oates is up to the task and I like the things I'm hearing from McPhee. Plus I think Robeiro was a great addition.

That's all I have at this point. Welcome back, Oatesy.

I still get a kick out of caps fans that think Hunter did so much for us by getting us just as far as we got the year before.

This organization is broken. 6 month coaching search and we get this?!

I think Hunter was a great motivator... but I said last year and maintain he sucks at Xs and Os and he's conservative to a fault. I think the important thing is that the team/players learned some things. And they did take the #1 and #2 seed both to 7 games. And keep in mind if that one games ends 7 seconds sooner they win that series. Rangers had some luck go their way. I understand what you are saying, but I also think it's being a little simplistic to say "they made is as far as the year before, they didn't do anything." They played tough, they earned some respect, and they were closer this year. The year before they laid down/quit against a mediocre Tampa team.

That said, if they don't make the conference finals or better this year, I think GMGM and OV have to go.

This is an organization that needs a shift in philosophy. Don Beaupre will be the next coach.

Seriously, did Leonsis post the job in the help wanted section of Craigslist or what?

Just to clarify:

1. When Boudreau had to go mid-season (and I agree that he had to go), Hunter came in as a favor to the organization. This was to allow the organization time to do a full coaching search without having to make a quick decision to fill the hole.

2. All of this came out after Hunter stepped down. Even if the Caps had won the cup he was gone. This was a favor and not a long term thing. IMO, it was a very classy and cool move by Dale and a smart move by Leonsis and McPhee.

3. Boudreau was fired at the end of November.

4. Today is the end of June, 7 months later.

5. In seven months the list widdled down to an AHL coach, and two NHL assistants.

....really

46 - Just curious, who is the choice the Caps passed over here in hiring Oates?

I understand you don't like Oates, but good coaches all come from the AHL or an assistant job at some point. I don't think that alone shows they didn't do a diligent, thoughtful search or make the right choice.

I'm just not aware of a plethora of Cup-winning coaches out there just waiting for the call from McPhee. I'm not even saying Oates the right choice, but I don't see how its an awful one. And mostly, I don't see a lightning bolt answer that we passed by en route to Oates.

Seems to me it's an unknown. And maybe he just said the right things to McPhee for what he is looking for. But I think we were going to have an unproven guy either way.

I have the privilege of meeting and speaking with Adam Oates on 3 different occasions. A finer, nicer, more gentlemanly person you will not find. He was gracious at all times and took his time talking to fans.

I golfed in a foursome with him in Ipswich country club. He was a very good golfer and loved to speak in a small group.

I would be happy if I was a Caps fan to see him as the coach. I think he will do well. He has dealt with superstars ( frankly he made them superstars) for his entire NHL life.
