Oregon Is Faster
Waller is going to be the next Dennis Dixon.
Waller commits to Oregon. Coach Olyduck is currently driving over to the Oregon foot ball operations offices to yell at Helfrich about taking a QB in this class.
Land O'Lakes (Fla.) High School offensive coordinator Josh Scroggins can pinpoint when James Pensyl morphed from a thrower into a quarterback.
It was at a 7-on-7 tournament at South Florida last July. Pensyl, a rising junior, had previously labored through spring practice and most of the summer, learning a new system while trying to combine his immense physical tools with better decision-making heading into his first season as a full-time starter.
Yet in that tournament, while matching up against some the best athletes in a high school football hotbed, Pensyl flourished.
"Even the USF coaches, they come up and they said, 'Wow this looks like a different kid,' " Scroggins recalled. "Really, from there, it was a 180. He turned the corner and he hasn't slowed down."
Perhaps that late bloomer status is why Pensyl hasn't exactly garnered much recruiting attention. He's not rated by Rivals and is only a two-star prospect on Scout. His only major scholarship offer is from Oregon State. Yet the Beavers believe they have found their quarterback for the 2015 class, and Pensyl reciprocated by committing to OSU while on an unofficial visit earlier this month.
"I think Coach (John) Garrett just wanted to jump on him before anybody else did," Scroggins said. "He sees the potential in the kid, and I do, too."
Pensyl has the desired measurables of a pro-style quarterback prospect. He's got a 6-foot-6, 205-pound frame. He's got a cannon arm.
Meanwhile, Garrett took notice of Pensyl. Scroggins believes Garrett first learned of the quarterback while in the area as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receivers coach. So when Garrett was hired as the Beavers' offensive coordinator, it made sense for him to pursue a prospect from his old backyard.
"When you come out and see the kid and you put your eyes on him and you watch him throw like Coach Garrett did," Scroggins said, "if you're a quarterbacks coach or a coordinator, you'll love the way it spins off his hand."
That first offer excited Pensyl. So he and his dad ventured out to Corvallis — Pensyl's first trip to the West Coast — earlier this month.
Pensyl loved chatting with Beavers coach Mike Riley. He loved the scenery, particularly on a visit out to the coast after touring campus.
The final time Pensyl met with Riley and Garrett on the visit, he committed.
"From the beginning, everything just felt right," Pensyl said. "I just really thought it was a place I could be happy for the time I spend in college. ...
"We went in there and I was with my dad, and I just told Coach Riley I was ready to commit. It was exciting. (Riley) was excited. Coaches were excited. My dad was proud. It was just a good feeling."
Beavs have like 5-6 15' recruits so far...
The thing with Waller is he has only played QB 1 year. he was a WR before
Senior defensive end Josh Shirley and sophomore offensive lineman Taylor Hindy are confirmed to have left the program at UW. No reason given at this time.
Shirley is big loss despite his normally being listed as a reserve end coming in the 'jumbo' packages. He was projected late last year as a potential first round draft choice in next years draft.
The other guy is a nobody really. Appeared in a total of two games against garbage teams. Likely won't be missed given their depth.
Wonder where Josh is going and why he left school. Odd time to do so really. Could have declared for the draft this off season and probably would have been at least a mid round pick.
^^^ one thing I always think about is how long Riley will stay at OSU.
It seems he has a golden parachute and IMO rightfully so. I think he leaves when HE is ready and that may be a loooong time from now.
Love that guy. How can anyone not like Coach Mike Riley if you read up on the guy.
It is going to be so strange when he is finally replaced.
said he wants to play his senior year close to home. so does he have a year to sit out? is he going for a waiver? or small school so he can just walk up and play?
Shirley is a 5th year senior so I do not believe he has to sit out. There is no sit rule once you have your 4 year degree, even in conference right?
