Unless I am directly involved in the outcome through my actions, I try to recognize that I am rooting for the accomplishments of others.

In a chat room that I used to frequent on yahoo (back when yahoo had chatrooms) there was one person who started using the first person singular to refer to his favorite teams. He was attempting to make the point that it is ridiculous to take ownership of the accomplishments of people you don't know by referring to those people in the first person. I think he was right.

So you believe if a person refers to things as "us" or "we", he is actually taking credit for and believes he did the actual things on the field? That's absurd.

I hate to break it to you, but I am well aware that I didn't do the things, and it's not even close to being a matter of taking ownership of the accomplishments of people I don't know. There are people on the physical team who don't do the actual feats, are they allowed to use "us" or "we"? I watch, I follow, I buy, I'm invested.

It's used because you have a connection with the team in that you are a fan. How we go from that to thinking it's claiming ownership of actions is based on a rather large assumption. In which apparently other people are unable to understand the difference in things they do, and things other people do. Which I'm pretty sure is likely not the case in 99.9% of the population.

I don't do it with Stanford, because even though they are my 2nd favorite team and I like to pull for them, the connection isn't there. Cubs I do, Sharks I don't. The difference? I grew up being a fan of Alabama and the Cubs, connection builds over time.

Also do it with kids teams. :noidea:

I think it's silly it matters to people.

If you are booster or season ticket holder or purchase ND products I think you are entitled to say we or us. You are contributing to the bottom line.

I believe that that is why I chose to not refer to the teams for which I root in the first person. Others are free to do as they please. However, I will call people out on referring to the teams for which I root in the second person when addressing me.

Definitely take a couple of dogs on that list.

That Oregon State line is interesting. Seems they view the UW close call as more than new coaching woes. A 1-11 mid-major team last year giving nearly 2 TD's to a mid level power 5 team? Hmmm.

Never mind, looked it up and it's Oregon State favored by 12.5. Thought that didn't look right.

Do you tell people "Those astronauts went to the moon?" Or do you use we/us when talking about the country? I mean if you didn't physically do those things, and contribute to the program itself then.

Because I'm also all about some "we went to the moon". And we do this as a country, and we do tons of things I don't directly have a hand in, yet I have an indirect role and connection to.

I'm also all about how "we" do in the olympics.

Am I also claiming I'm doing those things personally when I do that?

I think I stated my position clearly. (And you'll note that I didn't use "we".)

I never heard anyone make mention or take exception to these things until recently. It seems a bit crazy to me. I mean we can all recognize that in the literal language it's one thing, yet people can't see the actual meaning behind it's usage and why? It's wrong to signify a connection to something?

Been a common thing my entire life in association with things. Suddenly, I'm a dumbass who doesn't understand reality because of it. Well shit.

Next time someone says "My Country" I'm going to reply - Hey, you don't own this country!

Perhaps at one point I too was anal about stupid shit. When you get to a certain age and find the overall language being dumbed down more and more I think most find themselves letting go of the little things. Stuff that used to get me like the use of then vs than etc are now just being happy when people don't respond with b4 and U (for 'you').

Like it or not the language is morphing (always has, and always will) and those who choose to hold rigidly onto the meanings and strictness of the past are destined to be let down by an awful lot of the written language of today.

People who do that I don't even read. I tell them if they don't care enough about their opinion to write it properly, I don't care enough to read it.

I think the we/us is just showing a connection. I am experiencing every up and down with the team because of my connection. I am a part of it.

Everyone gets that. It's just if you want to be literal you aren't on the team so 'we' isn't accurate. Of course 'your' team means the team you follow and everyone knows that. It's just the anal dipshits that have issues with that use.

Does to me also. I am always amazed at Vegas when they do this.

Daring the public to take the dog. The huge money from the pros came in early and pushed it to -13.... It opened at -11.

I'm not very comfortable with line. I hope to heck Oregon can just beat MSU.

Posting in the cfb general is lowering my iq.

CFB discussion is at an all time low.

These people are so dumb. As if we can draw any conclusions after week 1.

They already know who is the best and which conference is the best. After a week.

The cfb general board should be called "Knee Jerk posting". That's all these dolts are capable of.

Think I will Hang out in our thread more. The dumb is just not represented in here like out there. And if the dumb is represented in the PAC thread, it is usually an outsider.

Not you nddulac. I think you are solid. Keep stopping by. Good to have ya. :suds:

Both Oregon school games are hard to handicap this week.

I know which way I am going in both.

And I hope I am dead wrong on both.

Ya know, it's strange. Usually the brain says this but heart says that in benefit of your team.

This Oregon game brain says Ducks, heart says they may struggle.

Wasn't impressed and now MSU has me worried before a game for he 1st time on a couple years.
