I feel like the flyers haven't played in ages. This is so lame... *kicks rock down the road*
thinking about setting up an offseason game on here to help pass time and stir conversation.. thinking it would be similar to the one Cobie set up on the main board for the playoffs
key points:
1. everyone would draft teams of 11 (2 fwd lines, 2 dpairs, 1 goalie)
2. we'd use a salary cap, probably half of the 2014 salary cap since it's essentially half of a team.. maybe a little higher since we'll have so many players available
3. we'd use salaries based on 2014 cap hits
4. there would be a little grace period in between the draft and 'the season' for people to make trades or replace players on their teams with guys that went undrafted
5. pending number of participants we could have a little season and then a playoff or something, determine winners based on votes. essentially I'd start a thread of Team A vs. Team B, and you vote on who you think would win.
basically like a little 'be your own GM' game and then the 'best GM' will be determined by games won.
would you guys be interested in that?
That's a great idea!
I'm wondering though if instead of "voting" on who wins, if someone who has, say, NHL 14, would be willing to set up a league based on our draft selections and then use NHL 14 to simulate the actual games? Just a thought.

Would it just be Flyers fans in the game? I think it'd be a good idea but maybe if we could get more than 8(which is what I did for the playoffs) - that would be nice
Also, what about drafting 2014 rookies?
Nah, could be open to anyone I suppose. Flyers fans get first dibs though
Didn't really have a number in mind. As many as possible was what I was thinkin
Thinkin 2014 rookies would be fine if someone wanted to pick them. Not sure how we'd work out the salary though. Maybe avg for first round picks last year? I personally don't think id take any rookies. Probably take more established guys, but I won't rule out rookies if someone wants to take them.
If we're voting on the winner, it would probably be best to have an odd number of teams, to avoid needing tiebreakers.
Or just do a tiebreaker, because if we're playing a short regular season first(like awaz said), then you could go by regular season numbers, etc - you could play every team that's in the league
Notable 17th Picks in the NHL Draft
The Flyers will have the 17th overall pick when the NHL draft starts June 27 at the Wells Fargo Center. Here are some of the players taken No. 17 overall in previous drafts:
Year Player The Lowdown
1969 Bobby Clarke Hall of Famer who led Flyers to two Stanley Cups.
1980 Brent Sutter Had 12 seasons of 20 or more goals.
1984 Kevin Hatcher The big D man had 227 goals and was a five-time all-star.
1993 Jason Allison Had two big seasons (33, 36 goals) with Bruins; oft-injured.
2001 Carlo Colaiacovo Has had a decent but unremarkable career as defenseman.
2003 Zach Parise One of the NHL's top LWs; has topped 30 goals five times.
2005 Martin Hanzal Had 15 goals and career-best 40 points this season.
2012 Tomas Hertl Rookie-of-year favorite before knee injury this season.
I meant voting on the winner of each game - If there are 16 teams, the vote could be 8-8. If there are 15 teams, no ties. Or, we could just leave the game as a tie.
2013 - Curtis Lazar(Ottawa) - He seems like he has a bright future there
2011 - Nathan Beaulieu(Montreal) - He played a little bit for the Habs in the playoffs
2010 - Joey Hishon(Colorado) - He made his debut in the playoffs for the Avs, he might be good
2009 - David Rundblad(St. Louis) - Had bright future but hasn't really amounted to anything significantly
2008 - Jake Gardiner(Anaheim) - Gone onto Toronto and has a good future
2007 - Alexei Cherepanov(NY Rangers) - Unfortunately he passed away, but he had a bright future too
2006 - Trevor Lewis(Los Angeles) - He's an integral part of the Kings right now
2004 - Marek Schwarz(St. Louis) - Was a bust, did nothing in the NHL
2002 - Boyd Gordon(Washington) - Solid career for him as a bottom six guy, good on PK & can chip in
2000 - Alexei Mikhnov(Edmonton) - Bust, did nothing in NHL
1999 - Barret Jackman(St. Louis) - Very nice career with the Blues, solid shutdown player
1998 - Martin Skoula(Colorado) - Had a solid career with a bunch of different teams
1997 - Robert Dome(Pittsburgh) - Only played 53 games in the NHL
1996 - Jaroslav Svejkovsky(Washington) - Meh, never really did a whole lot in the NHL
1995 - Brad Church(Washington) - That pick was a bust
There are some solid players in that group, so if the Flyers do it right they should find a solid player at 17
