Jalopy and TrustmeImright, you guys dont have to agree with me, but I'll stand by my arguement. I like Evans or Watkins at 10.

When he has averaged 1700 yards and 11 touchdowns while drawing double and triple teams all game long -- He is absolutely worth every penny.

Johnson opens up the offense for everyone else. Teams drop their safeties 20 yards off the line of scrimmage because of CJ, which opens up the running game and gives the RB room to catch the ball in open space out of the backfield.

He demands a double team basically every play, meaning the other WRs are facing single coverage all game long.

He makes it easier on the OL, because teams are only putting 7 in the box, so they aren't facing a ton of blitzes or teams stacking the line of scrimmage.

If there is any player on the Lions who has earned every penny he was signed for -- it is Calvin Johnson. Until his production drops, which by the way, the last 3 years were his 3 best seasons, he has earned every last cent.

Too bad the Lions #2 #3 #4 and #5 WR's haven't benefitted from all that you stated over the last 2 yrs. from a statistical standpoint.

I'll bet you anything Cooks isn't available for the Lions in round 2 if they hold their pick.

Obviously I'm not betting anything, as this is the internet. He could easily be on the board when Detroit drafts though. With the amount of WRs in this draft and the amount of bigger WRs who can flat out fly as well -- it is very possible he will be on the board in round 2.

Actually -- I looked up to see where he was drafted in the Walter Football mocks and I got a good laugh. Guess who they had the Lions drafting in round 2? Cooks. LOL. They did have him going 38th overall in one of them though.

That isn't Calvin Johnson's fault. He can only catch the balls thrown his way, he can't run routes and get open for the other WRs too.

:10: :agree:.. Carolina, Pats, Denver, Frisco, SeaHawks not to mention 12 picks in the 2nd round before we pick.... I would be absolutely and unequivocally shocked if he were still there for us in the 2nd round

DeSean Jackson is very similar to Cooks and he is/has been Philly's #1 for what 4 yrs. now

I agree with this one. Smaller guys aren't ideal outside WRs, but guys like Jackson and Steve Smith have trancendant talent- Cooks looks to be of the same mold.

That is funny. This is pre combine though. Cooks just ran a 4.3 flat, faster than Tavon Austin who was at 4.35.

If we did go defense with the 1st pick. I wouldn't be angry with Donte Moncrief, he was #6 on Kiper's big board before the season started last year. He also ran a 4.4 flat and is 6'2 220lbs. Ideal #2 wideout.

With all this WR talk, what ever happened to Corey Fuller? Amazing he couldn't even get on the field at the end of the season. Classic Schwartz, playing scrubs like Durham and Burleson who have little to no future with the Lions in a meaningless week 17 game.

I think Fuller has a good shot at earning a roster spot this summer. They knew he was raw and wouldn't play last year, so that's no news, but if he's honed his skills enough to be counted on on the field his size, speed, and athleticism could be welcome at the back end of our offense...

Yeah, I was cracking up when I saw they had Cooks as our 2nd round pick. What is funny -- they had Mike Evans as our 1st round pick. Imagine Calvin, Evans and Cooks in 3 WR sets. That would be tough to defend. Two monsters on the outside and a burner in the slot.

The one thing you can't judge this draft on is what happened last year. Last year, the WR position was as thin as I've ever saw it and overall, the draft wasn't very deep. This year's draft is overloaded with WR prospects, they set a record for most underclassmen declaring for the draft and they said this is the deepest draft they have seen in a long, long time. A lot of really good players are going to be on the board still in the 2nd round.

I just think it's crazy that there was 3 guards and a center taken in the 1st round, and Warford was a lot better than all of them...

Yeah, a great surprise. I'm still not ready to give up on Warmack though!

I absolutely don't believe in drafting someone because they perform well at the combine. Do you want athletes or football players on your team? The combine should be used to verify or disprove what you see on tape or via scouting.

Jalopy,

Nobody is saying draft someone just because of combine numbers. Obviously, we have to consider their production and things like that. The combine is an opportunity for a player to prove their worth.

Especially at WR, I think numbers mean nothing. Not saying I am right and everyone else is wrong. I just believe that players prove their worth on the field. If Watkins ran a 5.0, I would still pick him based on his film. If someone I didn't have rated on my board ran a 4.2, I still wouldn't touch him.

The most important part of the combine is the interviews. Other than that, the only reason they still have it is $$$$$'s

And where was Keenan Allen projected last year?

I am pretty sure it was behind Patterson, Hopkins, and Austin.

The point is a guy can be successful without being the #1 or 2 guy at a position getting drafted. I think the drop off from Mack, Barr, and Mosley is much farther than the drop off Watkins and Evans, that is to a second round guy at LB or WR.

Evans isn't a bad selection but I expect a real stud to slide in this years draft and would not be surprised if a guy getting top 5 billing slides to 10. With Taylor Lewan getting a lot of love and being the fastest OT it would not surprise me to see 3 OT go 1-9 again this year.
