LMAO.

Italy at the time were spoiled for choice at keeper with Gigi, Toldo and (to a lesser extent) Abbiati, much like Spain were during their reign of terror with Iker, Reina and Valdes. Don't know if we'll ever see one country producing as much GK talent as those two did at those times again.

Just wait until soccer gains more steam in the States. Once you get a handful of guys that decide they want to play goal instead of be wide receivers in the NFL you'll have monsters in net.

By the way Cathal, the soccer pitch at Berlin's Olympic stadium has a "gasp* track surrounding it so I guess it's got a high school feel as well.

Cathal Kelly has his panties in his bunch because the Women's World Cup is kicking off in Edmonton - Listen, I poke fun at Edmonton (more the Oilers) all the time, but even I think this article is way offside.

Kelly: Kicking off the World Cup anywhere but Toronto is a mistake - The Globe and Mail
1) Cathal Kelly makes Damien Cox look like a good writer. Don't give him the time of day.

2) I've watched maybe 1.5 games of women's soccer total, but I'll admit I'm upset Toronto isn't hosting games. Not only is this the biggest non-hockey team sports event the country has ever held, but it's an excellent marketing opportunity that the country's largest city's missing out on in order to host a 3 week long amateur games that nobody in the city wants and nobody on earth pays any attention to and has/will cost a fortune.

Maybe the enthusiasm of the crowd can make up for the aesthetic shortcomings. Or maybe not. The locals don’t seem all that interested. As of Thursday, the game was 5,000 seats short of a sellout according to organizers.

isnt commonwealth capacity around 55K ... if so 50K are gonna be watching a womans soccer game ... nope theyre not interested at all :L

You mean the location of tomorrow's Champions League Final?

How about where they held it in 2009:

Or in 2008:

Or in 2007:

Isn't Edmonton where they host many if not most Cdn women's team games anyway?

Thanks jstew, that was going to be my next post, 50,000+ out to watch a women's World Cup game, but yeah, they're not interested. :L

they gonna get 50k to watch that in Toronto? seems womens world cup would be classified in much the same way MLS or the CFL is in that "first class" city

BMO...err...National Soccer Stadium maxes out at around 40K, even with temporary seating, right?

And imagine the (justified) outrage if they played it in Rogers Centre just to get a few more people in there.

on that note happy birthday to blue jays at Skydome ... 26th anniverary of their first game today ... both the team and the stadium are probably deserving of an implosion

I think he's selling the Pan Am Games a bit short too.

I know residents aren't real excited about it and that direct revenues are expected to be well short of what's being spent, but it's much harder to measure economic impact, and from what I've read, there's a few projects (like the UP Express) that people have wanted for a while but which only got the kick in the butt needed to get them off the ground because of the Games.

..? Toronto had the second-highest attendance in MLS last season, and are 4th highest this season.

"So thanks for that."
