Just watched "The Equalizer" with Denzel Washington. My god did they fuck up that movie. It could have been a decent mindless action movie with the tired old plot of a retired 'super secret special agent classified black ops killer' but they even fucked that up. For some never acknowledged reason he doesn't use guns. It's so incredibly stupid that it took all of my enjoyment out of the film.

If your friends thought that Whiplash was about jazz, they missed the point of the movie. The movie is entirely about how far we are willing to push ourselves for greatness. One could have made the exact same movie with tennis, chess, a home-schooled student, or just about anything. It's just that jazz was a fucking awesome way to do it because it allows for great visuals and an audible experience which is second to none (you can feel his tiring as he keeps playing).

Indeed, Whiplash is a spoof of sports movies in a way. That last scene exists to put us in a ridiculously melancholy place which we never arrive in at sports movies: asking "is this a good thing?" In a basketball movie, the guy makes the last shot and we are all happy. That last scene exists to make us question that.
...

It finishes the movie off so well. It leaves the viewer queezy at what we just saw. That is absolutely the most troubling scene I've ever watched in a movie. It also is the best. In case people can't tell, I loved Whiplash. It's probably the best movie I've ever seen in a theatre, and may be the best movie I've ever seen.

This piqued my interest, I'm going to keep an eye out for Whiplash...thanks!

Run All Night. A decent Liam Neeson shoot-'em-up. Nothing special though. 6/10

Spy (2015) - IMDb

Had low expectations for Spy. Not a big MM fan. I found myself laughing throughout the movie and the trailers didn't spoil the good parts.

Statham was funny and MM did an excellent job.

Rose Byrne is just gorgeous.

Saw Stripes last night for the first time in god knows how long. Entertaining, but not near as funny as I remembered.

Also watched Moneyball last night. It's the first time I've seen it and only watched it at the urging of my mom. I liked the movie, would watch it again. I had to look up Billy Beane to get some background info, because the "flashbacks" were a little spotty. And Billy Beane's crazy. The Red Sox offered him over 12 mil and he turned it down? GTFO!

Kingsman. Very entertaining. More gory than I thought it would be and slightly more serious. Pretty fun action adventure flick still though.

While I haven't seen the movie, I know this used to be a television show. Don't know reason, but he never had a gun.

Well I didn't know that part, but I could have been fine with it. If they would have taken 3 seconds to add a line to the plot that he had promised his mommy dearest to never again pick up a gun. The reason it was so stupid was the simple fact that it wasn't even acknowledged that he was doing it. He would just walk into a room full of guys with guns, kill them all, usually using at least one of their own guns; then move on to the next room where he knew he was going to have to kill 100,000 more guys with guns, but he would be empty handed again. It just was too flat out dumb for me to be able to suspend disbelief enough to enjoy the movie.

That was so painful to watch. Even my 15 yo nephew was laughing at it (and not in a good way).
