True Grit (2010) with Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Hailee Steinfeld. Excellent film. I've seen it several times.
This is the first and only movie I went by myself.

Solid, liked the original better but I am a huge JW fan and Glen Campbell is one of my ALL time favorite singer/writer/guitar players.

Watched an older Chinese, sub-titled classic last night. "The Shadow Warrior". Good story. Acted very well.

Suddenly all of the movie networks seem to be backfilling with Asian movies. Some are pretty good. A lot of them outright suck.

The Third Man (1946), directed by Orson Welles, who’s also in the movie. Pretty good but I liked The Stranger and Touch Of Evil a little bit better.

Suzume (2022)

Japan’s 5th highest grossing movie ever is in American theaters for a few weeks with a dubbed and subtitled version. I watched it dubbed. This movie is pretty good for the whole family. The visuals are dazzling. It’s reminiscent of this director’s past 2 films. It’s just an enjoyable and well-done movie with a good bit of emotion.

Not a lot happening in the sports world this weekend.

So I broke out LOTR director's cut Blurays.

I thought my house was coming down when they were running from the Balrog in Moria. And it looked superb on the new large unit.

Something about using the ARC channel seems to make it sound even better. The Nazgul were very fucking cool when they flew over.

Borderline (1950) is a fast paced, entertaining movie based on an interesting premise. Two narcs, from different police agencies, get assigned to infiltrate the same drug smuggling ring, but neither is aware of the other's true identify. Fred MacMurray and Claire Trevor star as the two, with Raymond Burr in a supporting role as a drug kingpin.

Like most movies I've been watching recently, this is available at archive.org.

The Lady From Shanghai (1948)

Starring, written and directed by Orson Welles. A sailor meets a married woman who he falls for and agrees to work on her and her husband’s chartered journey. But there’s foul play being schemed up by a few on those on board. Her husband is famous criminal defense attorney whose partner is also aboard the boat. It pretty good overall, even if the 3rd act gets a little convoluted.

I did the Matt Damon Bourne trilogy on bluray. Action packed goodness.

Today I’m going to start my Alien Blu-ray box set.

Air (2023)

I love movies like this. Telling a story that we all know the end to while being really fun. They do a great job in making a shoe deal a feel-good story while making NBA mega agent David Falk look horrific.

I'm just > halfway through Till.. based upon the murder of Emmitt Till in Mississippi in 1955. It is just waaaay... tooooo... sloooooow. It could have used some serious editing. So far there have been at least 20 minutes of completely dead air where I guess we're supposed to be appreciating how sad and silent everyone is. Also, several scenes where relatives & friends approach his mother expressing how sad and sorry they are with her replying "He was my only child!". Just very repetitive. When it gets to the meat of the story it's good but there is way too much filler. I'm going to try to get through it tonight.

Unico in the Island of Magic. I saw it as a kid and it scared the crap out of me. Watched it a couple of days ago as an adult and it still creeps me out. 8 out of 10.

Insomnia (2002)

Christopher Nolan’s first major motion picture but the screenplay isn’t his. This movie is absolutely fantastic. It’s a simple but smart cat and mouse game between a detective brought in to Alaska to investigate a murder, and the murderer - with a nice twist. It’s constantly daylight there in Alaska and the detective can’t get any sleep. Or is it his guilty conscience not allowing him to sleep? Starring Al Pacino, Robin Williams, and Hilary Swank.

Broadcast News (1987)

A James L. Brooks masterpiece about the goings on at a DC affiliate of a national news network. In the late 80’s national news started to trend towards more fluff and less biting journalism. Our main characters have to navigate their profession, their feelings for each other, their egos and their ethics. Starring Holly Hunter, William Hurt and Albert Brooks.

The French Dispatch.

A very Wes Anderson film, but didn't have the charm of most of his previous movies.

I did like the part with the jailed painter, but the others weren't really worth the movie. Also, using a lot of fast french talking along with small and difficult to read subtitles had me rewinding or even pausing the movie so I knew what the hell was going on, and that's not a good way to watch a movie. The plot was hard enough to follow as it was without that extra handicap.
