My B1G Power Rankings

10) Purdue (2-0) - Win from Marshall wasn't super impressive with Marshall now 0-2. Purdue did beat Indiana State pretty good and is 2-0.
Purdue lost to Marshall

~ we may regret taking Illinois over UNC...
~ I'd like to see Rutgers overcome it's local troubles just a little more than I'd like to see PSU overcome it's shitty play...
~ would also like to see Pitt do well (for Narduzzi's sake)

Yeah Illinois is a big sleeper pick

Illinois scoring 96 points vs giving up only 3 so far this season is an eyebrow raiser. Currently, Illinois is getting 9.5 points by Vegas. We shall see this Saturday at noon on ABC if Illinois is for real.

My B1G Power Rankings

1) Michigan State (3-0) - Last Week: 1 - Michigan State had a 28-7 lead at halftime and let up on the gas with a 35-7 lead.
2) Ohio State (3-0) - Last Week: 2 - I don't think they were in real danger to lose the game, but the close game puts a wider gap between them and MSU and a smaller gap between them and NW.
3) Northwestern (3-0) - Last Week: 3 - The could, surprisingly, have the best defense in the B1G, but offense hasn't done much.
4) Wisconsin (2-1) - Last Week: 4 - Their loss came from Alabama, who still is one of the better teams despite their loss. Stave is looking good and defense is very strong.
5) Iowa (3-0) - Last Week: 7 - Pitt was a good win but Iowa hasn't played anybody close to ranked. Iowa hasn't really dominated either. Beathard looks good and DBs are strong. Need work in trenches on both sides.
6) Nebraska (1-2) - Last Week: 5 - Only 2 plays separates them from an undefeated season. They have not had a bad game and their near-comeback was very impressive.
7) Michigan (2-1)
- Last Week: 9 - Michigan has not played bad yet this season. They hung with Utah, dominated OrSt, and controlled UNLV. Defense is solid but offense still trying to find its identity. Big jump.
8) Minnesota (2-1) - Last Week: 6 - Minnesota looked really strong with TCU but struggled with Colorado State and Kent State. Offense is weak and defense is strong. No dominance.
9) Indiana (3-0) - Last Week: 11 - Yes, they are undefeated, but they only dominated FIU, and that wasn't a total blowout. Close games with a FCS and mid-major. Good offense, no defense.
10) Penn State (2-1, 1-0) - Last Week:12 - PSU gets B1G's 1st conference win vs Rutgers. They got some games that could give them opportunities to rise in these rankings.
11) Illinois (2-1) - Last Week: 8 - Have blown out their FCS and mid-major, but got totally blown out by North Carolina. Lunt is a strong QB and Illinois has looked impressive with their situation.
12) Maryland (2-1) - Last Week: 14 - Maryland dominated a few of their mid-majors but got dominated by a mid-major.
13) Purdue (1-2) - Last Week: 10 - I was wrong last week, saying Purdue beat Marshall. Purdue's only win was vs FCS, lost by 10 to Marshall, and destroyed by VT.
14) Rutgers (1-2, 0-1) - Last Week: 13 - That program in general is a mess and seems to get worse each week.

My B1G Power Rankings

1) Ohio State (4-0) - Last Week: 2 - Buckeyes look like they are starting to figure things out on offense, which they seemed to have struggled with the past few weeks. They did great against WMU, even better than MSU did.
2) Michigan State (4-0) - Last Week: 1 - Spartans looked sluggish against CMU. They were only up 17-10 heading into the 4th quarter. Defense is strong and offense is much stronger than NW's.
3) Northwestern (4-0) - Last Week: 3 - With, what could be the toughest OOC schedule in B1G, for NW to only give up 35 points is impressive. Offense is lacking though.
4) Wisconsin (3-1) - Last Week: 4 - Wisconsin may not have destroyed Hawaii from start to finish, but they have only allowed 3 points in their last 3 games. Big question will be how they do without Clement in tougher competition.
5) Michigan (3-1) - Last Week: 7 - Michigan makes a big jump with the shutout win over BYU, who has been on fire. Defense is strong and the offense is clicking.
6) Iowa (4-0) - Last Week: 5 - Iowa drops because Michigan has a tougher schedule. Iowa is on fire and has a big opportunity to rise with a win at Camp Randall.
7) Nebraska (2-2) - Last Week: 6 - You might see an 8-point win over USM, but it was not a close game. Nebraska led 29-7 heading into final quarter and 36-21 with 30 seconds left.
8) Indiana (4-0) - Last Week: 9 - The Hoosiers remain undefeated with a high-scoring win over Wake Forest, who has looked strong themselves. They just have too many close games vs weaker opponents to be higher.
9) Penn State (3-1, 1-0) - Last Week:10 - PSU's offense is starting to come around and their defense continues to be strong. They had a blowout win against SDSU. Loss to Temple still hurts them though.
10) Minnesota (3-1) - Last Week: 8 - Minnesota is the only B1G team to score 100 points in 4 games, and their defense hasn't really lived up to their week 1 performance.
11) Illinois (3-1) - Last Week: 11 - I get that MTSU is a strong mid-major, but Illinois gave up a 24-12 lead in the fourth quarter and needed a field goal to win.
12) Maryland (2-2) - Last Week: 12 - Maryland got destroyed by West Virginia, but still have a better resume than Rutgers and Purdue.
13) Rutgers (2-2, 0-1) - Last Week: 14 - Rutgers won, but they faced Kansas and only won by 13.
14) Purdue (1-3) - Last Week: 13 - Purdue is the only B1G team to be outscored after 4 weeks of play.

shit like this has a tendency to be somewhat unnerving:

MSU had surpassed its major injury total for both 2013 and 2014 when senior linebacker Ed Davis was lost in camp with a knee injury. At this rate, the Spartans will have more significant losses than the first eight seasons of Mark Dantonio's tenure combined. It is starting to creep into bizarre territory.

Other than "outscoring their opponent,"

I think Iowa will win if
  • Step up the passing game. Pittsburgh showed that the OL struggles picking up the blitz and ISU proved Iowa struggles when being pressured, but in both those games, Iowa adjusted. Iowa struggles running when they can't pass. So pass blocking will be key.
  • Pressure Stave. I am not concerned about the run game. Iowa is strong vs the run and Wisconsin won't have Clement. But Stave has impressed me. Iowa struggled vs Iowa State and Pittsburgh getting to the QBs. Grant it, Ott was injured and should be healthy, but still hasn't faced an OL like this. I am not concerned with the DBs. They have done a good job covering receivers. Only when the QB has 15 seconds to throw or the receiver has the last name Boyd did they struggle.
  • Ferentz and his staff need to remember they are shaking things up this season, and it has worked so far. They need to not forget that. It's exciting, it's unpredictable, it doesn't always work, but the players and fans love it.
I think Wisconsin will win if
  • They allow Stave some time to pass the ball. The OL's biggest obstacle will be Drew Ott, who is healthy. The WRs will face a strong secondary corps. They should look out for Desmond King at CB. If Stave has over 5 seconds in the pocket with no pressure, they could cause troubles for Iowa's defense.
  • On defense, contain and pressure Beathard. If Beathard has time in the pocket, he is dangerous. He can also take off running for big games and likes the bootleg. If he gets outside the pocket, he is dangerous.
  • Stay clean. Iowa, traditionally, is a program that doesn't cause many penalties. CB Lomax has a tendency to make costly p enalties though, but he is also dangerous and can hit hard. But they should not rely on Iowa to be penalized often.

Iowa can win vs The Badge!!! But the Hawkeyes have to attack on both sides of the Ball instead of going to the boo-scary conservative approach in big games of the past. Iowa QB Beathard has proven he can run and pass which previous Hawkeye QBs couldn't do, now they have a double threat QB. The question isn't the offense its the defense and secondary getting pressure on the QB. If the ends can get pressure on the QB in 3rd down situations then the secondary can play the middle tighter to force passes for interception opportunities. I'm not a Hawkeye Homer...its Iowa Football!!!!!!!!!!:2cents:

I'm not as high on Northwestern as some people are -- especially in the polls. I think the West comes down to Wisconsin and Iowa and I think Northwestern starts dropping games pretty soon. I think they match up well with Minnesota and should be of similar strength. I don't think they're a top 20 team right now.
