The rookie QB contracts are a really nice perk but I don't think teams are picking these guys just because they are on the cheap. If any of the top guys in the league right now hit the market these teams picking these QBs in the draft would be falling over themselves to sign those guys rather than draft a rookie QB.

It just boils down to if you want long term success you need a top guy and the rewards for hitting that lotto ticket in the draft make teams keep playing. The odds are terrible which is why teams clamor to get ahead of everyone else to increase the odds that they do hit on a QB because the more talented the guy is the more likely you are to get a top guy.

Because if you do land your guy and he turns out to be elite you have him for cheap initially but beyond that you're a perennial playoff team and you're set at the position for the next 15ish years. Patrick Mahomes will turn 26 later this year so the Chiefs probably won't start to worry about their QB position until the year 2033 and in the meantime they'll likely win the division or be at least a wildcard team for that timespan. Brady, Peyton Manning, Brees, Big Ben, Wilson, and Rodgers have had their teams in the playoffs for most of the seasons they've been at the helm.

Teams and GMs know the odds are bad but you've gotta keep those slots spinning until they land on 777.

My nightmare situation is using a midround pick on a QB that ends up being an above average talent at the position. Those guys still get paid huge money, but what they do is keep a GM/Coach at that spot where they don't want to take a risk and stick with mediocrity. The Andy Daltons and Derek Carr's of the world. Decent QB's, but the odds of them getting you over the top are very slim and somehow a team sticks with them for like 10 years before they figure out it isn't working.

(5)CIN--OT Rashawn Slater
(6)DEN (trade with MIA)--QB Zach Wilson

If there was a Vegas bet for that...I’d put money on it no matter the odds
Mac Jones: -300
Justin Fields: +200
Trae Lance: +470

It was only a couple of months ago where betting odds had if Jones was going in the top 18 or not.
Don't you just love draft season :pop2:

Crazy, mortgaging their future for Mac. I mean if JimmyG could win games, quite a few can as well

I read somewhere that they had gone to other teams to move up before getting the deal for #3 which made it seem like they weren't looking to get to #3 necessarily. They took the deal they could get, even if it meant overshooting Mac's value. Again, if true it surprises me, but maybe Mac ends up being that guy. So hard to tell coming from such a loaded offense. He may be disappointed in his weapons with the Niners after the riches he had at his disposal with Alabama.

They could've gotten Ryan from Atlanta for less than what they gave for Jones I bet

Jones salary be way less then Ryans I bet.
Actually no. Ryan restructured so his salary SF would've been responsible for would've only been 2M this year. Atlanta would've had to pay the rest since it was converted to bonus money

Only for 2021. Tell me what they ( 49ers) would be on the hook for 2022 if they traded for Ryan.

Is that more or less then what Jones will make for 3 years?
I believe the 3 slot is about 35M but that's for 4 years(?) So it'd be slightly more per year but u think it would've been worth it if you're trying to win now especially given you could've then traded Jimmy G

Mac could very well win games and play well but I still don’t think his ceiling could be as high as some other QB’s. He will be set up for success from day 1 though. We might never see a guy like Justin Fields’ potential if he goes to a shit organization. I think it would be ideal going to ATL and sitting for a couple years or even Lance to ATL but with rumors trading back and Ryan still under contract idk if I see that happening. NE is another place that would be ideal for Fields if SF goes Jones

NE would be ideal for Fields. Let us hope that doesn't happen. LOL
