Codi Heuer is someone to keep an eye on. He had put up some good numbers over a short stint in the big leagues before needing Tommy John. This is from an article in MLB.com last May.

The Cubs acquired Heuer from the White Sox as part of the Craig Kimbrel trade during the 2021 season. The righty fashioned a 1.52 ERA in 21 games in ’20 while averaging 97.6 mph on his fastball. In ’21, Heuer had a 4.28 ERA in 65 games between both Chicago clubs but saw his velocity fade as the season progressed.

Heuer averaged 97.3 mph in April of 2021, but that rate dropped to 94.8 mph by September. In spring of ’22, the right-hander underwent surgery and lost a full season to recovery, rehab and training.

Since starting his Minor League rehab, Heuer looks more and more like himself again. Over eight games with Triple-A Iowa, he has hovered around 97 mph with his fastball, reaching back and touching 99 mph a handful of times.

“The stuff’s there,” Ross said. “But he wants to be able to command it. I think that’s probably the next step.”
I sure picked the wrong guy to spotlight today.

From Shawn McFarland:

Wyatt Langford (oblique) has resumed some light baseball activities. He said he’s “feeling great” and threw/ran the bases today.

Doesn't need to rush it.

From MLBTR article today about minor league deals around the league:

Rangers: Nick Ahmed, SS, $1.25MM | Jesse Chavez, RHP, $1.25MM | David Buchanan, RHP, $1.375MM | Kevin Pillar, OF, $1MM

A few things bear emphasizing. First, this is clearly not a comprehensive list of minor league signings throughout the league — nor is it even a comprehensive list of the listed teams’ non-roster invitees to camp. Secondly, many of these sums are of little consequence to the team. They’re not even guaranteed, after all, and even if a player makes the Opening Day roster and earns the full slate of his minor league salary, most of these salaries aren’t going to carry significant payroll ramifications.

That’s not true across the board, though. For instance, the Rangers are fully intent on remaining under the $241MM luxury tax threshold. At present, RosterResource projects them at $235.7MM of luxury obligations. Opting to select the contract of Buchanan or Chavez rather than allocating those innings to pre-arbitration players who’s being paid at league-minimum levels (or a few thousand dollars north of it) would inch the Rangers’ CBT number forward. They’re not going to hit the tax line even in if they wind up adding multiple NRIs to the actual roster, but selecting their contracts will further narrow the resources president of baseball ops Chris Young will have at his disposal for midseason dealings.

From Shawn McFarland:

Dane Dunning got Gabriel Arias to swing-and-miss so bad on his slider that Arias’ bat went flying into the netting.

Nice inning for Dunning.

Dunning is looking sharp in limited action so far this spring.
Think he will be excellent in whatever role he serves in this season.
I could see him being absolutely dominant as a reliever, barring injury to the rotation.

Yeah, I agree. If they had multiple injuries and he had to start, I would feel good about him starting.

Yeah, I agree. If they had multiple injuries and he had to start, I would feel good about him starting.
If he spends a good chunk of time in the rotation, I bet he replicates his 2023 season.
If he is able to stay in the bullpen, I think he could very well be among the best relievers in the game.
Like a sub 2.50 ERA and a surpringly high K rate.
Let's not forget that before deGrom went down in 2023, Dunning was on an absolute tear working out of the pen.
Such a valuable pitcher.
