Yeah, they were talking about needing to get Smith into the lineup 5 or more times each week.

I imagine he fills in at 3B and SS for at least 40 games just due to injury downtime for Jung and Seager. Then he will probably plays those positions another 15 to 20 times when they are being rested. Add in the games he fills in at the other 5 positions, and occasionally at DH, he's going to get to play a lot.
I think you're right on there as for his playing time and where.
With the caveat that he could also eventually earn a specific everyday role if someone like Garcia's struggles from last year continue into this year.

Houser with a good 2 innings. He may be in the running for one of the long men out of the pen.

They won't have anything much to spend until they trade a contract. Even that might not help with the $5 million in makeable incentives that Mahle has in his contracts, unless they trade Mahle.
that's why i said early in the offseason they need to clean house. basically, start with Grey and Mahle and then unload Taveras, Heim, Garcia for whatever they can get for them. then next offseason make it clear that deGrom, Seager and Semien are available. perhaps even Eovaldi. that would get us 2 things: reduce payroll to a level the owners are comfortable with and with no pressure to compete and allow us to play OUR prospects

teetotaler, and it seems logical. sometimes you need to take 2 or 3 steps back and recalibrate. moving Gray and Mahle right now makes sense. that opens up starting pitcher spots for Rocker and Leiter. go into the season with deGrom, Eovaldi, Bradford, Rocker and Leiter as our 5-man rotation i doubt there is one Rangers fan who wouldn't love to see that. Taveras and Garcia are blocking several good prospects along with Smith who look to be ready to play regular time at the ballpark. and when next offseason rolls around and 2026 ST there are 4 or 5 more that Seager, Semien. Eovaldi and deGrom will be blocking. it is a logical path to follow you would have to be drunk not to see that

I don't mind making some of those moves but I am totally against another rebuild because the one we did after those world series appearances was brutal and needed to happen because the window had closed. This window is open still and for now I don't want to lose Seager for sure. What got us out of the dump was signing guys like Seager, Semien and Eovaldi. Just bring these future studs along patiently.

Odd that we score 8 runs but went 1 for 13 with RISP.

Then you are just being very sarcastic.

You are facetiously equating the idea of trading Mahle to make room for other additions as being the same as a complete overhaul and teardown of the team. Just come out and say you are afraid to trade Mahle.

Maybe try being realistic and forthright in discussions.

Actually, I think you are probably drunk, though.

The Rangers may not have a proven closer, but they are going to be deeper in the pen than I can ever remember.

And all it would take is one of these quality relief pitchers to perform above their head and now we have one, like what happend with Yates last year, when we all thought he'd be pretty good but didn't anticipate him seizing the closer role.

The one pitcher who has caught my eye is Dane Dunning. He surely does not want a king pen job doing mop up

Have to think more development is needed for Rocker and Leiter with Kumar needing innings restrictions. That is why he is not opening as a starter. That Garabito may end up being the long man.
Good problems having depth
Same goes for position players

Believe you may be correct concerning Rocker and Leiter.

You're going to need at least 2 long men (probably 3 with one doubling as a starter) with the innings restrictions that are more than likely going to be placed on DeGrom, Mahle and maybe even Bradford. Especially if any injuries occur to Gray or Eovaldi, remember both Lorensen and Urena had over 100 innings last year. If Rocker impresses use him as a long man cause he'll probably have 100-120 innings restriction too. That way he'll gain experience and will be ready to be stretched out next year because Gray and Mahle might very well be gone...

Pennington and Garabito were the only other relievers with over 70 innings last year (will they even make the team) so most of what is currently in camp are short guys. There is going to be a lot of shuffling around of pitchers this year no matter how well/bad the team plays...

nope i'm looking at the move as an opportunity to give Rocker that well-deserved starting pitcher role and then considering that moving Gray would also open a starting spot for Leiter, sure one or both would open the financial options. which is more important? the later moves also are logical possibilities depending on how the seasons go. haven't you been pushing trading Taveras and Garcis for days or weeks?

Garabito and Houser both have a chance I think.
