Taking a Catcher doesn't surprise me but most of them have warts, so am still expecting SS or SP to be chosen if good one is available...

Most of the more recent mocks have Parada being taken closer to between 8 and 10.

I really, really, really hope the Rangers draft an outfielder like Jones, Green or DeLauter.

From Jeff Wilson:

The Rangers have never been big on making splashy bullpen investments. Joe Nathan, who is making his debut his year on the Hall of Fame ballot, is the most meaningful exception in the Jon Daniels era.

Don’t expect that trend to end this offseason. Besides, the Rangers will be adding to the bullpen — from the 2021 injured list.

Right-handers Jose Leclerc and Jonathan Hernandez, who underwent Tommy John surgery last spring only weeks apart, are likely to be ready in late May or early June. That was the word from general manager Chris Young the last time the duo came up in an interview, in October at instructs.

There’s no sense in asking for an update now, with team employees not allowed to discuss players on the 40-man roster or MLB free agents.

Anyhoo, the Rangers will have to plug two late-inning roles to start the season. They ended the season in good shape there thanks to Joe Barlow, who seemed unflappable in saving games as a rookie.

Getting the game to him was an issue, as was simply being a position to use the closer. The Rangers trotted out Spencer Patton, Josh Sborz, Dennis Santana and Brett Martin in the seventh and eighth innings.

That might be how 2022 opens, though it seems likely the Rangers will add some veterans on minor-league deals. They had tremendous success with that last season with Ian Kennedy.

If the Rangers are going to spend on a reliever, that’s how they will do it.

That’s not because they spent $561.2 million on Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Kole Calhoun and Jon Gray. The Rangers just don’t put heavy resources into their bullpen.

Are you looking for a CF or just OF in general

I want a good hitter who has substantial power. That most often means someone who will play a corner, but if he can play center and also be a really good hitter, that is good too. This club needs some more OF bats in the system unless they intend on converting some of the MIF to OF.

Ideally an OF would be best. But we can not pass up and elite player any position if available

It seems that most of the OF prospects the team has are A ball and rookie so they really aren't that sure what they have with them. The ones above them the clock is ticking on them because they haven't learned to hit yet, Walker, Thompson and Taveras. I think because of the amount of IF prospects they have that are closer and can hit they will try to convert 1-2 of them to OF like Foscue, Smith, Wendzel and maybe Apostel :noidea: (although I doubt the last one). The team has shown they will do just about anything to get a good bat in the order, heck they put Napoli in LF if you remember :tsk:

All this being said if there is one available that they think will be ready by 2023 with a big bat they may pull the trigger, but since they're losing draft choices because of FA signings they may stick with C, SS and SP...

The way it looks now, taking an OF would not be a reach at all. That could change a lot. It could change enough that the top 3 guys in the draft could all be outfielders too. The way it looks now, I want an OF.

A year ago, I really liked Jud Fabian. That changed a lot. Lol

At this point I don't really know what the best move is. I do know we could have won more games this year if we had a few dependable bats. Hope we pick a couple more up and don't care if it's IF or OF. Would like to see Kershaw on board.

From Jeff Wilson, this morning;

The MLB lockout doesn’t not prohibit teams from contacting minor-league players who are not on the 40-man roster, as they are not part of the players association, and the Texas Rangers were in contact this week with most of their top hitters in the system.

Among those in attendance were Josh Jung, Dustin Harris, Aaron Zavala, Josh Smith and Davis Wendzel. Justin Foscue was not there because he just wrapped up a stint in the Arizona Fall League and the Rangers feel good about where he is.

The Rangers summoned around 20 minor-leaguers to Surprise, Ariz., for a hitting camp so that they could get to know new bench coach/offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker and new hitting coach Tim Hyers.

The camp also served as an informal offseason check-in to make sure the prospects are following the plan the Rangers laid out for them late in the season.

So far, so good.

“We're out here getting familiar with the language that we all use and making sure that they really just hear consistent vision from coaches that we anticipate they're working with in the future,” assistant general manager Ross Fenstermaker said.

“It's just an opportunity to see everybody in one spot together before the holidays and make sure everybody's on the right track and path before we kick it into the next gear as we get ready for spring training.”

The work was all done in the cages at the Surprise Recreation Campus. Some players were there only a few days, while others had longer stints.

The good news is that the new messaging isn’t much different from what players have been hearing from minor-league hitting coordinator Cody Atkinson and the staff of hitting coaches throughout the system.

Ecker and Hyers aren’t reinventing the wheel here.

“Cody and the rest of our hitting department, it's a consistent message,” Fenstermaker said. “So to hear from your major-league staff and for it to be directly in alignment with what they've been hearing from Cody and the rest of the group for the last two years, it's powerful and it's consistent.”
