No use making a big deal re minor league depth. They will eventually not have a roster spot.

Not sure why that is bad. If they block a roster spot of course I agree but seriously doubt that is gonna happen
why is anyone concerned with this? they aren't expected to even be anywhere in the Rangers plans

Not sure why we picked up Billy McKinney unless we’re about to trade away a few of our outfielders and needed a 5th OF type for depth?

Zack Reks doesn’t look bad though.
Looks like he’s been held down in the minors because the Dodgers are so good.
He has had a .295/.383/.487 line across 1200 minor league AB. His slugging % is actually a lot higher over the last 2 years too. .286/.384/.537 over his last 900 ab. .921 OPS
Not too shabby.

I was actually looking at his baseball reference profile a couple of days ago. He has 2 minor league options remaining. Not a bad pick up IMO.

If there’s a little potential there for him to be a .245/.335/.475 hitter. I’m all for it.

Zach Reks was ranked #38 in OPS out of 600 minor leaguers with 350 AB or more.
Ranked higher than a lot of really good prospects.

If he was 5 years younger I would be impressed.

Normally I would feel the same way.
But he was drafted out of college at the age of 23. He performed well in college and has performed well every year since drafted.
A .921 OPS in the upper levels of the minors isn’t easy no matter the age.

Adolis was never over .818 in the minors.

It’s not out of this realm to believe Reks could be a .245/.335/.475 hitter with some good coaching, film and a boost of confidence

Perception we let better players go by not protecting them to get lesser players... which I get
It is a hedge against potentially losing Thompson and Walker. Not sure anybody cares about our perception
One thing is for certain we lost over 100 games and we know who the potential studs are. In our minors and who we are pursuing via Free agency

We can easily get the real deal players if our proposed deals are accepted.

Methinks this tiny transaction is water under the bridge soon

I don’t care for Steele Walker but I do like Bubba Thompson.

If we added Bubba Thompson to the 40 man and then had to remove him from the 40 man after other acquisitions would it be easier for other teams to acquire him??

Because any team that drafts him in the rule 5 would have to keep him on the 26 man all year. Vs if we add him to the 40 man then remove him from the 40 man after acquisitions he becomes a minor league free agent?

Kind of a smart strategic move?

Or am I wrong on this?

I believe you are correct and I like Bubba but he is no world beater yet. So if another club wants a guy who has good defense excellent speed but hit tool is not quite ready for the majors and they want to sit him on a roster all year, he is there

If the best thing you can say about a transaction is "it will have very little impact on the club moving forward," then yes I am going to wonder why a team in full rebuild mode is making that transaction at all.

I’m sure the same was said about Max Muncy, Justin Turner, Chris Taylor, Mark Canha, Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista.. etc ..

Somebody asked a question, and I answered it, I personally don't care, for the same reasons you mentioned

Personally I think most of the guys in this conversation will be available again to us soon or good riddance

The same was said about 1000 other guys and the ones who said it were right.

We could say this about every single player in our system. So we actually have, by far, the best system in baseball.

Reasons for the Rangers’ aggressiveness

The Rangers are in on practically every top free-agent infielder, not to mention starting pitchers, prompting some in the industry to wonder why owners Ray Davis and Bob Simpson suddenly appear ready to spend big.

The answers are not all that complicated. The Rangers have less than $51 million committed in 2022, including projections for all four of their arbitration-eligible players. Their commitments drop to $3.75 million in ’23 and zero in ’24, not including arb eligibles.

Payroll flexibility, however, is not the only factor driving the Rangers’ push. The team, with Globe Life Field open to fans in the regular season for the first time, led the American League in average home attendance last season, ranking fourth behind the Dodgers, Braves and Padres. As the COVID-19 pandemic eases, that average – 26,053 – should increase.

Of course, it’s one thing for a team to demonstrate a willingness to spend, and another to persuade free agents to take its money. The Rangers are coming off their fifth straight losing season, a 102-loss campaign that was their worst over 162 games since 1973. Their rebuild does not appear to be as far along as those of two other teams active in the market, the Mariners and Tigers. Baseball America, in its most recent organization rankings, placed the Mariners first, the Tigers sixth and the Rangers 11th.

The Tigers are an example of a team that chose to promote their first wave of youngsters before adding veteran talent. The Rangers have promoted some of their prospects, only with less success. Their goal this offseason is to create a foundation of quality veterans who would enable their top young players to settle in and develop.

Via Ken Rosenthal. Btw he thinks Corey S will resign back with LAD
