QBs vs. Super Bowl schemes
Breaking down Flacco, Kaepernick against likely defensive game plans

Joe Flacco and Colin Kaepernick will both look to go long Sunday.

Despite our constant need to identify the elite quarterbacks in the league, this year's Super Bowl will pit two players who have yet to enter that conversation in Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco and San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick.

As we continue to hear about the sibling head coaches, Jim and John Harbaugh, perhaps their biggest commonality is the bold moves they made during the season to vault their respective teams to the Super Bowl. One turned to a player who had never started a game heading into the year, and the other fired an offensive coordinator who wasn't getting the job done late in the season.

Both moves helped propel their teams into the Super Bowl and now, with both quarterbacks playing near the top of their game, let's take a look at the defensive schemes they're likely to face Sunday and how they've responded previously.

Flacco Under Pressure

Flacco has not been very good while pressured, as he ranks 24th out of the top 38 qualifiers in accuracy percentage while under duress. Whether it's an inability to read blitzes or simply being unable to avoid the rush, this is not one of the stronger parts of Flacco's game.

Sure, he has had some bright spots in recent weeks, particularly the now-famous 70-yard touchdown to Jacoby Jones against the Denver Broncos in the divisional round that he made with Von Miller bearing down on him. But as with all quarterbacks, performance drops when under pressure, and this is perhaps even more important against Flacco, who thrives when given time in the pocket to drive the ball down the field.

San Francisco relies heavily on their four-man rush led by outside linebacker Aldon Smith. His sack totals have taken a hit in recent weeks, probably because of defensive end Justin Smith's injury, but he was still able to get into QB Matt Ryan's face seven times in the NFC Championship Game. Both Smiths will have to be on top of their game in order to slow down Flacco this Sunday.

Flacco Deep Ball vs. 49ers Pass Defense

The Ravens' offense is built around Flacco's ability to make throws down the field and this is an area in which he has excelled during the playoffs. During the regular season, Flacco led the league with 17.3 percent of his throws traveling 20-plus yards, but he ranked only 15th in accuracy percentage at 40.2 percent. That number has jumped up to 54.3 percent in the playoffs as the deep attempts have finally started to pay off. It should be noted that Flacco is the only quarterback in the league to avoid throwing an interception on the deep ball.

On the other side, the 49ers excel at avoiding the big play. They've allowed only 22 out of 90 deep-ball attempts to be completed for an impressive 8.3 yards/attempt (a low number given the depth of the pass). Their cornerback trio of Chris Culliver, Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown have done a nice job of keeping the ball in front of them and all three rank among the top 27 at the position in yards/cover snap at 0.96, 1.04 and 1.17 respectively. It will be a great battle of strength against strength when Flacco looks to make plays down the field.

Kaepernick Under Pressure

As much as Kaepernick receives publicity for running the ball, it's his ability to make throws both down the field and under pressure that have made him an upgrade for the 49ers to this point. His accuracy percentage of 67.2 ranks ninth in the league (including the playoffs) as he has been able to either avoid pressure altogether or make the throw with a rush in his face. Perhaps the one alarming number for Kaepernick is that none of his touchdowns have come while under duress, but overall, it has been a good showing for the second-year quarterback.

Kaepernick Under Pressure
Dropbacks Pressured Sacks Att. Comp. TD INT Comp % Accuracy% Accuracy% Rank
319 104 18 69 33 0 2 47.8 67.2 9th

Kaepernick Deep Ball vs. Ravens Pass Defense

Kaepernick is one of the few players in the league who can challenge Flacco with regards to arm strength, but he also has shown great accuracy on his downfield throws as well. Including the playoffs, he's the league leader in accuracy percentage on throws traveling at least 20 yards at 54.8 percent. Whether it's the deep crossing route he threw against the Saints in Week 12 that hit Delanie Walker perfectly in stride or the wheel route that he threw to Vernon Davis in the divisional round that was placed perfectly over the head of LB A.J. Hawk, Kaepernick has shown that he has all the tools to be a top notch passer in the league.

He'll be going up against a Ravens defense that looks eerily similar to the 49ers' with regard to defending the deep ball. Though they've been gashed at the intermediate level, the Ravens' cornerbacks have avoided the big play, allowing only 29 percent completions on throws of 20 or more yards downfield. Free safety Ed Reed is not the player he once was, but his ability to patrol the deep middle of the field, along with Baltimore's ability to disguise pressure and force quick throws, is a huge factor in their success. Kaepernick will have to pick his spots when it comes to attacking the veteran safety.

Kaepernick Deep Passing
Att Comp Drops Yds TD INT Acc% YPA
42 22 1 695 5 1 54.8 16.5

Ravens Defense vs. Deep Pass

83 24 788 6 5 9.5

Final Word

If you like big-armed quarterbacks capable of making big throws down the field, this is the game for you. Flacco will be challenged by a 49ers defense that is capable of creating pressure with their front four while playing sound coverage on the back end. Kaepernick has to contend with Baltimore's blitz-happy scheme that finds ways to confuse even the savviest quarterbacks. This game could very well come down to which quarterback is capable of handling the opposing defense's pressure while finding a way to make big plays in the passing game. This Sunday either Flacco takes the next step toward living up to his immense potential or Kaepernick completes one of the most improbable runs for a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

In a game filled with storylines, perhaps the biggest revolves around the two quarterbacks who have a chance to prove which Harbaugh's bold move will pay off most in the end.
