Spring Training 2021

I continue to marvel at Leuery Garcia - and his 10 year tenure with the White Sox. I don't think you could invent this guy and what he brings to the team - if you tried.

interesting player in that he sucked his first 4 seasons ... and has been a spectacular extra man his last 4. at least his bat. he's always been good at most any position in the field.

@Jiddy can say what he wants, but there is no doubt Grandal is intangible this spring training thus far.

I thought Tim Beckham would push Danny Mendick this spring. Until a couple of days ago - I thought Beckham didn't show up, but he has one of those

Legend has it that LaRussa came into the clubhouse on the first day and started slinging racial slurs and insults at every player he could in the first hour...The clubhouse and season were about to be destroyed before a single pitch....

...Then Grandal showed up and was like "Tony was JK y'all" and now LaRussa is hosting a pot luck for the whole team at his house this weekend.

Dude's amazing. I ordered one of his bobbleheads and, well, let's just say that the house is immaculate, my boys are behaved like saints and it gets fer-ea-kay in the bedroom ever since it showed up.

Tony La Russa is confident that Yasmani Grandal has enough time and will receive enough game action to be ready for Opening Day. This a day after the White Sox catcher was hopeful but less definitive.

I'm not excited about Grandal being out since we have no other catcher. He's fine as a catcher. I just don't like him at the top of our order...We'll see how that goes.

McCann would have been just fine for us. My personal opinion is that he would have been marginally better. But it's not that big of an on-field difference to worry about...unless the opportunity cost between what we paid Grandal and McCann cost us increases in other places. That's hard to quantify, but since Jerry didn't go large this offseason I'm skeptical at this point that the extra money would have changed things.

The Bulls aren't that sh*tty...so that's nice. I mean...They're going nowhere...but not being sh*tty and actually uttering the word "playoffs" with it not being a complete laughingstock is nice.

Good to see Dylan with three strong innings today, even tho the Cubs only went with three from their starting lineup. We keep hearing how the Sox need three dependable starters for the postseason, but I think we need a minimum of 4 dependable starters just to get into the playoffs.

Ethan Katz certainly works with the pitchers - minute by minute. Ol' Coop just chain smoked and watched and then made comments about his observations. I have high hopes for what Katz can get accomplished with this staff.

Smart signing. Good to have him hanging in the minors as a potential call up if anyone gets injured. He could be useful as a PR/defensive replacement for the stretch run and into the postseason.

Someone is going to have to tell Zach Collins - competition for the backup catcher role was just a joke - because Lucroy has the job - meanwhile Collins is probably the biggest surprise to me in this camp. His spring OPS is over 1,000. Collins has also shown improvement behind the plate. Mercedes is also hitting the ball well and probably has logged the most game innings catching during the spring.

Catching has all of a sudden become a team depth strength - we may see a trade at the end of spring to loosen the log jam.

Strength of depth isn't something I would qualify until I saw the production on the big stage.
