How can you have Durant over Kobe at this point of his career? lol

4th all time in PPG (Kobe is 12th)
8th all time in PER (Kobe is 23rd)
9th in Win Shares/48 (Kobe is 56th)

Even in career win shares, Kobe is 15th and Durant 44th. If KD averages 12/season like he did last year, he'll pass Kobe in 6 years. KD is 28.

The NBA hasn't seen anybody with the combo of skills like KD. Name me one other player ever who has been 7' with that length who can shoot the 3, rebound, pass, handle, and score like KD.

Kobe played until he was 37 - he had one 15+ win share season in his entire career. KD has put up a 16.1, 18.9 and 19.2 already.

So based on his unique skillset, his career achievements to date and his expected output over the next 6 seasons, I'm pretty comfortable saying that KD is a top-10 all time NBA player.

If he retires at 34 (3 years less than Kobe) he should be past Kobe in every meaningful career statistic.

Yea but you're forgetting 2 things:

1. He doesn't have the rings, which is bad.

2. He left to try to get the rings, which is also bad.

Poor guy never had a chance.

He should, but he hasn't yet.

So you're basing this off of what you think he's going to do? That's cool (not sarcasm), this top 10 is completely open for interpretation so if you feel KD will finish a top 10 player and want to put him there that's up to you.

KD has yet to go through his declining years. Kobes PPG, win share and PER dropped a lot in his last 3 years.

Compare stats up until the age of 29 and tell me who the better player is.

By that rationale, Lebron is also doomed because he doesn't have the rings of some other all-time greats, and he left to try to get the rings.

Makes no sense.

I feel like if KD retired today, it would be a David Robinson situation, and he would be undervalued as an all-time great but his PER/per48/rate stats would be top-10 all-time.

Stat accumulation doesn't define greatness to me.

You're right, it makes no sense.

And I don't think it will necessarily keep him off of top 10 lists when his career is over, but I think it will be taken into consideration.

I'll just compare first 10 seasons in the NBA.

Durant 27.2 PPG
Kobe 23.6 PPG

Durant 25.2 PER
Kobe 22.2 PER

Durant .219 WS/48
Kobe .206 WS/48

Next?

If things keep going as they have been, I think that the leaving teams thing won't be used against guys as much.

When the players that most seem to rank ahead of Lebron (MJ, Kareem, Magic) were playing, FA wasn't what it is now and leaving your team wasn't as common as it is today.

Now, we are seeing guys leave teams while still in their prime to chase rings or because they would just rather play someplace else. As time goes by and more players do it, it'll become more of the norm (or at least happen enough that it feels like the norm) and won't be counted against them so much.

I don't think anybody other than you penalized players for their declining years. Everybody declines. Players who last longer at their peak get bonus points (Kareem) Players who decline early and have short peaks lose points (Shaq). Players who go through natural evolution and are not the same at the end game shouldn't lose anything (Just about every great player).

I wonder what Kareems stats would have been like if he went straight into the NBA.

Really? Because a lot of people are comparing the stats of KD and lebron, who are currently still in their prime, against a guy like Kobe who had to suffer through four injury ridden final years.

Who do you think is going to come up top?

Some try to compare career totals. Who do you think wins that? The player who is retired or the 32 year old?

The way you compare is by looking at the player's best years. LeBron's best are better than Kobe's best.
