the Pirates GM (Hendrixon or something) said he was willing to do something stupid but not willing to do something insane

not sure there's a difference

It was the smart thing to do...None of those guys are game changing hitters.

Pence would have been a nice pickup, but at what price?

Without looking it up or knowing what his FA status is, I'm sure he's commanding a far higher salary than he's worth...and for a cheap organization like the Pirates?

Not worth giving up pitchers, which is I'm sure what the Giants wanted.

He'd be their #2 and you know it. And they wouldn't have signed him if it were only going to be a rental. Garza keeps saying he wants to stay somewhere and I'd imagine Pittsburgh would be a great place to hang around for another 18 months or so.

he'd be their #2...but he's a 2/3 at best, therefore not much of an upgrade over the stable of 3's they already have...

And he's still a 2 month rental that cost the rangers a top prospect, 2 lower level/tiered pitching prospects, and a PTBNL...if I am getting a rental for that? I am getting more than Matt Garza....

ultimately, do you really give a shit who posts where?

your site is getting traffic and that is all that should matter, no?

why perpetuate it

concentrate on more Holly Peers

So you think I'm in this thread every day because of "traffic?" And somehow Zig's Bar and Grill has impacted that? Or what?

And I'm the one perpetuating something?

Garza would have been enough to put the Pirates over the top in the division. The second there was word the Cards were talking to Theo, they should have made their move and made the commitment.

That said, the Pirates are a stacked organization right now and they obviously have confidence in their system next season. Beating the Cards four straight has been a real bonus for them.

I don't think Garza is worth a shit honestly. He's redundant on what they already have in their rotation, a gaggle of 5-6 inning pitchers.

They lack a true ace IMO, but Garza doesn't fill that need.

The fact you keep saying this, doesn't make it true...

No matter what, he still had 2 season in Pitt where he got almost 1100 plate appearances combined, including 614 in 2006.... 15 HR's, slugged .414

his last year in pitt, before he was outrighted and toronto picked him up....he played in 113 of 117 possible games..12 HR's, slugged .404

he looked like exactly the same player his 1st year and a half in Toronto too...and then? :noidea:

Relax dudes.. i could care less. I am busting your chops. I aint the big PED basher. It is what it is

Here's the way I look at it. You pick up a solid #2 pitcher and option your shaky #5 or move him to long relief.

Again, I wouldn't have done the deal for a rental and I wouldn't have matched the Rangers offer unless the Cards were ready to move and then I would have had to seriously consider the risk of going and getting the guy vs. the reward, and let's face it, the Pirates want to win it all this season. Him moving from the Cubs to the Cards with all the matchups remaining this season would have forced me to seriously consider it.

Like I said, they have to be feeling fabulous after taking the last four from the Cards. A five-game sweep is not devastating but it'll be the kind of thing that haunts them in October.

The Pirates need to keep winning and I hope they watch waivers very closely for an opportunity to upgrade somewhere.

They're "shaky" #5? Charlie Morton right now? 3.59 ERA....but doesn't go deep in games... Garza? mid-to-low 3 ERA...goes a little deeper in games than Morton...that "upgrade" doesn't justify the cost of acquisition...

lol

still a great song

Disagree, not a fan...as a horrible amateur guitarist, it pains me to see such a beautiful instrument going to waste...

he should give it to me...that song wouldn't sound any worse if he played it on my $500 Ibanez...and that Jackson would sleep in bed with me at night...

If you don't think Matt Garza is an upgrade over a long reliever forced into the end of the rotation, you're ill-informed.
