By the way I would not be against the trade if it was more player oriented. Keeping the Dline intact for more than two years is going to be quite hard as each of these guys hit their FA year. If they could keep some combination of 3 guys on the Dline I would be okay with trading two of them and the 1st this year and next. That is an awful lot but Watson is one hell of a QB and they should get something out of a couple of those guys because they won't be able to sign all of them.

I took a look back at that 2017 NFL draft and what we all had to say about who this team should and should not select with the 17th overall pick. It is interesting to note that there was one poster who insisted upon this team moving up 5 spots to get Deshaun Watson, referred to as a second Warren Moon at the time. Making that move then would have effectively gotten Watson at significantly lower cost than it will today. Our pick, at 17? Johnathan Allen.

Anybody want to tell me that if you knew or listened to what I knew then, would you have passed on Allen and gotten Watson?

I screen shot some posts from that time, if anyone wants to review them let me know and I'll post them in a separate thread.

Do it...I am curious

Then we would have no payne ,sweat, no young. Could not even draft them and maybe no Rivera no del rio gruden still be the head coach .. just be patient .. patient is refreshing
First, winning teams aren't ever in position to draft high, so you're right and wrong but only you can decide which position that you would rather be in... 1. continually drafting late year after year or 2. continually drafting high year after year.

Last, I have been patient since 1999, it's no longer refreshing but tiresome. The worse part is unless there's another 68 years in store for me before I claim my toe tag, I'm running out of time and, wait for it.. patience!

SN: If Gruden was still the coach, wouldn't that mean that with Watson and Gruden this team would be a winning one because they weren't in position to draft the people that you listed?

Deshaun Watson Trade Rumors: Jets Aren't Atop QB's Wish List Amid Texans Drama

Deshaun Watson reportedly wants out of Houston, but he doesn't necessarily want to go to New York.
After one report suggested that the Jets were Watson's top destination, SNY's Ralph Vacchiano said he "doesn't have the Jets at the top of his wish list." Instead, a source told him "there are several teams to which the three-time Pro Bowler would welcome a trade."
"Really, though, the top of his list might be, 'Anywhere but Houston,'" the source told Vacchiano. "If he really wants out, why would he say 'no' to any trade?"
According to Chris Simms of NBC Sports, Watson is "willing" to sit out the 2021 NFL season rather than play for the Texans again (h/t Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media). However, new general manager Nick Caserio told reporters the team has "zero interest" in moving the star.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas didn't commit to the future of quarterback Sam Darnold, who just wrapped up his third season in the league and said he wants "to be a Jet for life," per Brian Costello of the New York Post.
"We've got a lot of decisions to make," Douglas said, per Costello. "I think that Sam's going to be a great quarterback. I'm excited to get a head coach in here, go through our process. I had a great conversation with Sam yesterday. I won't go into the specifics, but I think Sam has a very bright future in this league."
ESPN's Adam Schefter expects Darnold to be worth a late first-round pick on the trade block, and the Jets already hold the second overall pick after a catastrophic 2-14 season.
Watson, who led the league with 4,823 yards while posting 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions on a 70.2 completion percentage, would certainly be an upgrade from Darnold, who threw for only 2,208 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 59.6 percent of his passes through 12 games.
Vacchiano's source did not reveal what other destinations might be on Watson's list, though Vacchiano did mention the Miami Dolphins as one possible landing spot.

Trading for Watson is NOT a win now move. That ONLY exists in the minds of people who aren't able to get out of the way of their own fears and expectations. So, for the sake of clarity, getting Watson will ONLY stabilize the QB position for the next 10 - 12 years. The work that has to be done in the draft, free agency and re-signing our own players still has to be done in order to win SB's. This can be done without "gutting" the draft but it puts the onus upon the scouting department, GM and to a lesser extent the HC to effectively do their jobs.

Make no mistake, in today's NFL having stability at Coach/QB always equals wins and championships. Think about that for a moment then tell me that there has been one SB winner where that has NOT been the case. I'll wait!

OR..... Let's do what every winning SB team has done; stabilize the HC/ QB spots.

Unless it's not clear at this point, Washington has already told the world that anyone that they could get in the draft, without trading up, won't be good enough. Further by going after better talent, they are also signaling that acquiring lesser (second tier) talent at QB also isn't acceptable. Rivera wants wants top ten or better talent, but people here want to spend low rent prices to get it. When has that ever worked out in the modern NFL world?

I have no problem with multiple 1sts and either Payne or Allen part of the deal
Not enough.
(1st) 2021. (1st) 2022, (3rd) 2021, (3rd) 2021, (2nd) 2022, (4th) 2022 plus Payne. This is my offer, take it or leave it. Getting most of the damage of picks out of the way this year and next. Threw in an extra 3rd this year because I don't want to give up my 2nd rounder this year. Entice them with a conditional 1st round pick in 2023. We will still have a few comp picks coming our way and FA to fill a few holes. Ioannidis replaces Payne's departure and we draft DT depth in later rounds. I would still like our #2 WR via FA and to draft another WR as well. I'm looking at ILB with our #2 pick this year if viable as well as OL depth later in the draft. I feel we are adequate at G should Sherff resign but could use more depth at OT. We should have less holes to fill next year so 2022 should not hurt as much as this year all though not having 1 & 2 in 2022 does make me cringe a little but a player like Watson at his position only comes along every so often. I can see why Houston does not want to trade him however, they screwed up and Watson likely will never play for them again and has stated he will sit 2021 if not traded.

Texans receive:
DL Daron Payne
2021: 1st, 3rd, 3rd [Leaves WFT with 2, 4, 5, 6, 7]
2022: 1st, 2nd, 4th [Leaves WFT with 3, 5, 6, 7]
2023: Conditional swap of 1st rounders depending on who's is higher.

WFT receive:
QB Deshaun Watson

I don't like the idea of giving them a 2nd rounder because they become too valuable after giving up those 1sts. and I'd prefer to take the big hits this year and next. That said, I can't really argue with this offer!

Besides the picks, what I think makes this offer even more attractive is the upside of Payne who is under team control for 2 more seasons. He is durable having played in all but 1 game since entering the league. He took about a season and a half to get acclimated to this level but this season alone was stellar for him as he contributed in so many ways, from sacks, tackles, pass deflections, forced fumbles, interception and a fumble recovery while starting all 16 games. At 6'3 330 lbs who runs really well for his size and now has a good feel for the game he certainly has huge upside and a bright future in the NFL.

Washington has a player or players to offer in this possible deal that could be dealt and the hit isn't terrible. Love Payne, Love Ioannidis, but if it takes one or both, Washington could more easily replace them than Sweat or Young.
