I re
Rating is incomplete until after the draft. I believe he is a glorified secretary for John Fox and has very little control of final player decision. Yes, I know he was told he had full control, but what he was told when he was hired, that was before Fox hired himself here.. So as long as the paperwork is in order is the only grade of an A that should be given. This is the John Fox show. No way a first time GM would get the staff we have, especially not Fangio. Pace chasing Fox back to Denver the day after the interview is still a big question mark. Pretty sure thats when he told Fox he would have everything he wanted.

The Marshall deal was lame. Only guy showing heart in a dead locker room, only 1000 yard receiver we can remember. Someone that wants to be known as a great gm would fix the issues, not just send them packing for a late pick.
Member a few 1000 yard receivers for the Bears......which fucking team you watching or or you just a pup and have only been a fan a few years.LMFAO

Tillman isn't gone for sure, the others.....good riddance. I'm glad he didn't over spend for players.....

Um, yea but you sorta need players. I understand not overpaying, but sitting on the Bears wallet isn't going to do any good either.

Well, there's not a ton of wallet left to spend. I think there's around $7 million or thereabouts provided we sign the Tampa bay guy.

  • RE: unloading Cutler. Don't want to rehash this. But not many QB's available that are better. Many more that are worse or unproven.
  • RE: Marshall. Rich makes some valid points. But it's a move I personally didn't like. Pace obviously made the move for the good of the team. Takes guts, not stupidity.
  • RE: lack of activity in free agency. Not many guys out there worth paying for. Kudos to Pace for not doing what almost every other GM does - overpay for players who aren't worth the money. (And free agency isn't over.)
  • RE: assembling the coaches. Fox has shown leadership since day 1. That alone seemed to be missing the last 2 seasons. And he has an edgy no-nonsense approach. Something that was missing the 8 years prior.

Pace grade so far: B

I don't know, I don't think Pace hasn't been willing to pay for guys he thinks he wants. I would say he definitely overpaid for Rolle and slightly overpaid for Royal. Like his choices or not, a criticism I would not make is that he has been "inactive."

If he s a glorified secretary for Fox then you are a glorified secretary for noonthirtyjoe.........such a stupid comment

He came from New orleans where that is all the general manager does, and theirs is Mickey Loomis. Sean Payton tells him who he wants and Loomis gets the paperwork done.

Why would the bears sign a guy that was trained in the type of system that the GM does not have full player control here so he could have full player control? Some of you are busy believing how this football system works.#gullible

I'm only grading the moves so far. Pace himself we won't be gradable for sometime. I wish we knew more about how much control Pace has. While I was against the hiring of Pace, I will give him time to fix this mess. I don't hold the BM thing against him as I believe he had orders to jettison him. But I do hold the fact we got pretty much nothing in return for a top top WR.

well, AI, I don't really know how much power he does or does not have, nor do you. I suspect like most teams these things are more a committee approach than anything. There is, however, one serious flaw with your "he's just Fox's dogwasher" argument. He was hired before Fox, and presumably negotiated his exact team control before taking the job, when Fox wasn't yet even in the cards. I'm sure Fox wants his share of control like any coach would, but I'm a little dubious that he's that powerful. If he is, then why did we sign Rolle instead of Moore? Where's Terence Knighton? I see Fox's influence on the coaching hires, but not on the free agent signings.

I sort of doubt any GM in the league would have gotten more for Brandon Marshall.

Right, Pace was signed first while Ernie and the boys were interviewing head coaches. Pace sat in on one interview before supposedly handling all of them. Fox was not available at that point and there were strong references that Fox would not want to work with a first time GM with no player experience. Fox interviewed, flew back home, Pace chased after him. I cant think of anything else that was said other than OK, they are giving you the personnel say. Ever walked out of a car dealer after giving your final dollar amount just to have the salesmanager flag you down? Nobody knows what happened in that room, nobody knows what happened to make Pace chase after Fox the following day, but to say I am just assuming wrong does not seem fair.

As far as Moore, Knighton, Fox knew them better than anyone. Maybe he has more reason to not want them here than to want them here. Maybe Fangio just would not like their fit in his system. Worst case if you are right, Fox said he wanted them and Pace signed the other guys anyway. Sure hope that did not happen.

On the BM deal... I don't know much about Mike Wallace...but he's a little younger, less of a LR problem, just as productive, and had a high cap figure. Traded for 5th round pick.

BM needed to be dealt.
I'm staying away from an A grade thus far, but I do see that Pace is setting up some accountability here. Won't take bad LR guys, and won't throw around huge money to fix past poor drafting mistakes. From almost all I've read about McPhee he was/is the next up and coming pass rusher and was very high on a lot of lists. At his age, if projections turn out to be true and Fangio can work some magic that deal may be very good for the Bears.
I know why many are pissed at Pace- he's an unknown. We don't know what he's going to do in the draft...I'm guessing many won't like whoever he picks- Especially if it's an offensive player in the first. (Cooper is my pick if he falls to 7) I'm sure sticking with Cutler is also a bugaboo for many.
We always say it though...you can't win anything in March. Winning Free Agency doesn't mean shit...just ask the Bucs.

jeez, I only just noticed this. Knighton only got $4 million out of Washington. We weren't willing to beat that? Or did Fangio really not want him? I have to believe the latter.

Its hard to believe the 49ers didnt want him. With Willis retiring and Borland with this surprise retirement after one year. Most people thought the new defense would be built around Borland, just having guys fill spots seems important.

I don't know....it sure seems to me like SF has gone into full-fledged rebuild mode. If this isn't them throwing in the towel on 2015 and remaking the roster, then I don't know what the hell is going on with them.

With some of the 1-year deals of late, and reading some of your comments, I think the GM grades may get a little love.

a little, yeah, but not a ton. On the whole I think he's done OK in free agency, not great, not terrible. The draft will obviously be the next big thing to watch....can't wait!
