If Smith plays out the year like this and we end up winning 10+ games and/or making a run in the playoffs you have to bring him back no question asked.

Also, why does everyone think just because he was drafted in the 2nd round that Kaepernick is our future QB? Their is a chance he never starts for us.

They do that with every QB who is not Alex Smith

The thing is, when a new medicine is in the R&D stage it isn't available on the market like Total QBR is. There have been plenty of medicines that never got past the R&D stage because the developers discovered multiple flaws in it.

To use the reason that Smith's TDs were weighted lightly last week because we were way down and he didn't do much on the winning drive is acceptable, though not agreeable. You can make the argument that it was garbage time and the D was in prevent making things easier for him so it shouldn't be rated as heavily.

Likewise, on its own to say that Orton's performance when trailing by 20 points last week (throwing 2 TDs) should be rewarded because it gave the Bears the opportunity to win, regardless of the outcome, is acceptable.

However, to use both arguments at the same time creates a massive paradox as both statements can't be true.

Again, don't have an answer. I'm going to take myself out of this debate

I'm still invested in the idea that the QBR is the best rating system so far

don't want to read this thread so sorry if its been discussed already, one last comment....

make no mistake, i'm very elated with how Alex Smith is playing, clearly we wouldn't be 4-1 without his participation. however, just wanted to say funny how stats can be a little misleading, there was at least two "should've been picks" by Tampa Bay? want to say there were three but not quite remembering it?

anyways, he could've easily had 2 more picks on his stat sheet, so sometimes it bounces your way, and most times (in his case) it doesn't.

what we hope to see now isn't more stats, but more consistency thru entire games.

Yep, also known as Drug Trials - Phase 1,2, and 3. It's a 10 year process, and yes, chemists actually do understand the formula of the drugs they make, just not all the side effects and even positive ones it may have.

As well as some should have been TD passes that can't really be blamed on Smith. You are right though, people shouldn't lose sight of the fact that things could have gone differently. Momentum is always a big factor, and those plays could have shifted it out of our favor. Things went our way.

Still though, Alex's turn over numbers ARE down. That's something to be happy about. We are showing we can win with out them.

I remember two..but youre right I seem to remember a third one but I cant put my finger on it.

One was a long pass to Kyle Williams that should have been picked by Talib. The other was at the goal line. Both were once the game was well out of hand too though.

In answer to one of the earlier questions I would definitely sign him, assuming he has a good year and continues to progress. The QBR rating stuff seems a little half baked to me --- my bottom line with Smith is that he has cut down on some outrageously dumb plays, cut down his turnovers, made some damn good throws, seems to command the huddle, and in the last few games has actually been more than a "game manager", and seems to get better the more he is with Harbaugh's system, what more could you want?

I wasn't trying to sound like a debbie downer, I just didn't want to ignore Alex Smith's negatives when discussing a possible longterm deal for him after the year.

The way the market is, with Kolb getting 60 million for the unknown... I'd have to imagine that if Alex Smith keeps this up and finishes with something like 21 TDs and 5 INTs, the 49ers are going to have competition with bringing him back. He won't be back for a 3 year 15 million dollar deal when other people are offering him 40 million or more.

competition to bring him back? smith and harbaugh seem to click and do u think smith wants to go through his 8th offense in 8 years?

a game manager who can engineer drives. u can go with dilfer++ or jake plummer without the 5 TO's in the first 3 quarters to describe smith this year.

If Smith keeps this up and finishes with the 3rd highest QB rating, he's going to draw interest as a Free Agent. That is all I mean by competition, I honestly didn't factor in his own desires to stick around with a coaching staff that finally "gets him". The competition will be there, and he may be tempted by it... but in the end I think you're right that he won't walk away from what is finally a great situation for him.

smith coulda walked away when things were horrible with this franchise. i really don't see him walking away from the coach that went against everyone out there to bring him back.

I would imagine he would want a 4 or 5 year deal. To me that would be the only issue. If he plays well enough to deserve 10 mil + a year then Im ok with it, but the length of what the niners would want to offer versus what he would want may be an issue. My guess is the niners would want to offer a 2 or 3 year deal only. Anything past 4(depending on the guaranteed money) basically tells kaep that he isnt in the niners plans.

yep, biggest momentum shifts start with turnovers.

don't want to take away from how well the 9ers played, but to me Tampa Bay played like they had a monday night game, then traveled cross country? so while we still likely win the game, score would've been closer.

kaep really shouldnt matter at this point. he seems like a longshot to be an nfl starter.

i don't remember, but did we move up before or after dalton was picked?

I think they moved up after Dalton was picked.
