I was listening to KNBR today and there were some callers pretty ticked with the lack of moves by The Giants this offseason. With The Marlins and Angels spending like drunken sailors on shore leave, it has made some wonder why The Giants aren't doing more...

Anyway, seems like a decent topic to introduce. Here are some arguments on both sides...Please add more.

WE SHOULD BE PISSED!

This organization is making a boatload of cash! Why aren't the owners spending more?

Angel Pagan and Melky Cabrera? Really? Is that it?

The opportunity to win with three dominant, young starters and a stud bullpen will not exist forever. Seize the day!

Are the owners holding onto the cash, knowing the team will sell out most games next year no matter what?

WHY WE SHOULD GIVE THE OWNERS A BREAK

On paper, the team is one of the top five in the NL.

Posey/Sanchez/Melky will help make the offense average, which is all we need to win 90+ games.

20 million a year goes to paying for the ballpark.

I heard a lot of the whiny bullshit today, mostly on Damon Douche's show. Essentially, he whines the same thing every fucking year: THE OWNERS ARE CHEAP....WE'RE WASTING THE PITCHING...WAAAAH....WAAAAHHH....

And his "regulars" (read: shrill pantshitters) chime right the fuck in on cue. I could slap those fucking children silly.

Here's the deal: We have a payroll of $130MM...that's MORE THAN ENOUGH to compete. We do not have an ownership group that is going to spend $150MM. All the whining bitches need to get over that. $130 is plenty to contend if spent well. Douche and his lunatic simpering callers feel it is their G-d given right to have owners spend more money whenever there's a problem.

We don't. When Zeets and RoRo come off the books, maybe we can sign a bigger ticket FA. Until then, we have to live with those mistakes.

We are not the Red $ox or the Yankee$ or the Angel$.

Pretty good topic and as you showed you can make a decent case either way.

We aren't the Angels/Yankees/Red Sox-type spenders and anyone expecting that isn't being realistic. Maybe we'll get a little closer to them after the stadium is paid off (fuck the Marlins by the way...)

The owners got a pretty blank check for breaks from me in November 2010. They are doing what they did before 2010 and that worked out pretty well.

I am eternally grateful that we won a WS, given I was starting to wonder if we ever would

However, given that since Bonds MVP years (2004ish) we have had 4 losing seasons, 3 winning seasons and 1 post season appearance, I am not sure that amounts to ‘working out pretty well”, in fact, I would say the front office has been way under .500 on performance over this time, 2010 could easily be described as this franchises’ ‘Torres’ year.

I am amazed that extensions where handed out.

I do also agree $130K is more than enough to compete and to expect more is unrealistic.

Dude we won the World Series :bounce: I could give a shit about what happened before then! The only way I'd be pissed is if they pulled a Florida Marlins and sold everyone off.

Tzill is right when fucking Zito and fucking Rowand come off the books we'll be in a pretty good spot to get some good players. If at that point they screw the pooch and sign, say, like a fucking Rowand and a fucking Zito, I will be at the head of the :lm:

I get that, i just dont like all the 'give them a free pass' cause we won the WS, Bochy and Sabes have a done a lot more losing than winning over the past 5 years.

FTR - I didnt want them sacked, nor think they hopeless, I just don't think they deserved extensions after last year (maybe after this year) and have to say 2010 was more likely the 'fluke" season than 2011 for this administration.

In a nutshell - I dont think either of them did a very good job last season and was suprised they got rewarded for the effort.

Yeah, they totally fucked up last year. Remember when Sabean destroyed Posey's leg? And managed to injure Panda, Franchez, Schierholtz, Romo, Wilson, Torres, Belt, and a few other guys? Then he got the best bat available to make up for his stupid tactic of injuring everyone, and then managed to hurt HIM too?

And Bochy...do you remember how he made Huff and Ross so unproductive?

And they only won like 86 games...coupla failures, I agree.

I'm not "pissed" at all.....not even close.....but I'm a little bummed that the Giants can't write off Zito and Rowand ($30mil) off as money earned during the World Series run and still have a $130mil payroll as if Ro-Ro and Zito's contracts didn't exist. It is what it is though and no matter if they go down to a $50mil payroll, I'll always love the French Vanilla as long as they stay in SF.

That's funny, and your point is valid, but your sarcasm is drowning out what amounts to a very important observation by our friend Down Under (that sounds gross). Of course, Sabean and Bochy deserve the extensions. The real issue is do fans have the right to be mad at the owners for not expanding the payroll? He gave some valid reasons why we do. We go on and on about which season was a player's real self. 2010 Torres or 2011 Torres? 2010 Panda or 2011 Panda? etc. 2010 was the outlier for this ownership group.

That said, it is ridiculous to be up in arms about a lack of moves before the season starts. Most of the good things that happened in the 2010 season were because of front office decisions that were made while games were being played. Yes. Anyone throwing a temper tantrum right now is an idiot (well, any grown person throwing a temper tantrum over anything is an idiot, but you get my point). However, Ozzie is right that this (now slightly different) ownership group needs to prove itself. Luckily, we have the rest of our lives to evaluate it because none of us are going anywhere as Giants fans (and our farm has finally developed some great home-grown talent!).

I'll stop being an :dunce: now.

Wow you got that from "I don't think either of them did a very good job" and "I didnt want them sacked, nor think they (are) hopeless, I just don't think they deserved extensions after last year...".

Talk about 'hyperbole' - very poor form.

I repeat they weren't great last year - Miggy, Ocrap, sticking with Huff, RoRo, Torres ahead of Belt etc the constant pointless platoons - sold C+ maybe B- for holding together a injured team until September - but nowhere enough to get an extension when added to the 2007-2009 performances.

No free passes around here from me - the performance of the team in 2012 should have determined their combined futures.

This is my thinking exactly. Consider them dead weight, subtract 32 million from the payroll, whatddya know, we have money to spend.

I think the thing that troubles at least me, and probably others is the willingness to throw money at Willie effing Bloomquist and apparently not show much interest in retaining Carlos. I know that may not be the case but still...

You can repeat whatever you like, doesn't make it true. I think their body of work and very recent WS title justified the extensions. I think 2011 was among their best ever years. If either left, they'd be swept up IMMEDIATELY by any number of teams and rightly so, as they are both considered among the top of their profession.

But, hey, we're just yakking here. You have every right to be wrong. :peace:

I have one question: The Giants gave every indication that they were willing to try to re-sign Carlos Beltran. Everyone knows the dollar amounts that would have taken - even on a 3-year deal.

So now that Sabean has gone and acquired better outfielders like Melky and Pagan, where is the money that was set aside for Beltran?*

One more thing: Those of you who are still listening to KNBR get what you deserve. The ONLY time that station should be on is when the Giants are playing or when you cannot watch an NFL game because you're traveling and want to hear the game.

If you voluntarily listen to Ralph or Radnich or Damon Douche or the Warrior guy who is on in midday, you are only hurting yourself. Go find a better diversion like methamphetamine use or mumbly peg with blind people or trying to cross the freeway while walking on your hands.

KNBR blows ass.

This!

Remember our old pal TrueNiners/Tommy3000 always bitching about Radnich? He never had a good reply when I told him to stop listening. His best was 'well, that's what's on the radio while I'm driving'. As if he'd never heard of CDs. Or, like, OTHER STATIONS.

This Giants team will be worse than last year. Pitching can only get you so far, but with no hitting to go with it will just be a mistake.
