Yeah - by "should" I meant something less than "will". Playoffs are not a certainty by any means. We will have to scrap for every win, and there are a number of contenders.

I agree 100%. I think that the DBacks did a really nice job of improving themselves for the 2012 season. Improved their pitching quite a bit. Still think ours is better but the gap has definitely been closed. They always had a better offense than us and still do. They may even be a slight favorite to take the NL West. Haven't taken the time to look around and it's still so early in the 'prediction' process but the NL West will not be a cake-walk for either team.

+1. Rep-tastic. With the Marlins getting better and the Braves staying about the same, the Wild Card won't be easy either. Luckily, both the Brewers and Cards will be worse. Still, barring injuries to three of Posey, Timmy, Cain, Bum and/or Panda, this is a playoff squad. :lock1:

... and the off-season isn't over yet! Well, it kind of is for the Giants. :sorry:

Job for tzill (or anyone else with the ability/time): We give the Giants the edge in the SP category; The D-Backs are a better offensive team. But...

How much better is the Giants 'pen than Arizona's?

And how does the Giants defense compare to Arizona's, with Posey and Craw playing full time and Drew returning to the D-Back lineup?

Our offense will be fine if:

1) Posey's ankle holds up
2) Posey's hitting didn't suffer from the long lapse
3) Panda continues his 2011 form as opposed to his 2010 form
4) Belt is given playing time and
4a) Belt's bat develops into the potential power bat that scouts keep insisting he has
5) Pagan is the leadoff hitter some experts believe him to be
6) Franchez holds up for a full season and
6a) Franchez goes back to hitting a la 2010
7) We get 2011-like production from Melky
8) Stamos continues to develop and hits at least .240

As you can tell, that is A LOT of "ifs" and the likelihood of most to all of these things happening next season is pretty slim. The more anemic our offense is, the more likely Cain and/or Timmeh will bail. That doesn't leave a very good taste in my mouth.

If all those things happen and we get elite pitching, we'll win 100 games. Some of those things won't happen, but we'll still win 90+.

1) EXACTLY why we need a REAL backup catcher. We need chez to show well in Fresno at the beginning of the year so he can be the catcher-in-waiting, just in case.

2) Good point. But I think the bigger issue will be that he needs to NOT push and just let it happen. He has a lot to prove, to himself more than anyone, so he may try to hit a 6-run HR every AB.

3) 2010 was the fluke, I think. Will he have another 2011? Who knows, but even in 2011 he was battling injuries, so it is a DISTINCT possibility that we have not seen his best yet.

4) He is apparently slotted to be an active part of a big, complicated rotation, so he will have EVERY opportunity to either get more ABs or go back to Fresno. I think it is more likely that he will blossom. In 2011, his results sucked, but his approach was pure MLB.

5) None of us REALY know what to expect from Angel, but I do not think we need him to be an All-Star, he just needs to be solid. I think that is possible.

6) There is no chance Freddie Glass plays the whole season, but we know that going in. If he plays 120 games, and hits .290, that will be a success. Keep an eye on Culberson to be a surprise filler for him. I am not super-high on Charlie, but a guy can hope.

7) This is not fair. Melky had a super-solid season in '11, and now he is coming to AT&T. There will almost certainly be a good sized drop-off. At the same time, he has all the tools, and everything I have heard says that he grew up a lot in 2011, so maybe he has finally figured it out.

8) .240 is not an unrealistic goal for him, but I do not think it is required of him either. If he continues to give GG level defense and average 3 or 4 pitches per AB, he could hit .210 and I will be happy.

Drew ain't coming back till around late June. He's still on crutches, and his rehab is going really slow.

To put it in perspective, Posey cracked his ankle and tore some ligaments. The only thing holding Drews foot onto his leg was the skin and muscle he didn't tear. This break could give Tyrone Prothros a run for its money, and that dude can't even run in a straight line anymore.
