This Giants team will be worse than last year. Pitching can only get you so far, but with no hitting to go with it will just be a mistake.

:L

SportsTIPS, eh? I guess we could bet the other way on your tips.

Got any stock picks I can short?

Grantland's take (love that site) on the Pujols deal:

Is Albert Pujols Really Worth $250 Million? - The Triangle Blog

Short version: he doesn't really state whether ALbert is worth the $ but he does make the point that 1 player isn't going to change them that much. They will be contenders for the AL crown along with the Tigers, Rays, Red Sox, Yankees, etc just as before.

The extensions for Bochy and Sabey Sabes???

:D

LOL. I am not looking for the Giants to suddenly get into the Prince Fielder sweepstakes, but I want to know that they have a legit shot at a guy like Jimmy Rollins.*

For the record, everyone knows that I was hoping SF would sign Fielder. But since Poo-holes got 10 years and $252 mil, Fielder is going to get at least 8 years and at least $180 mil. Even I don't believe he's worth that much money. Heck Adrian Gonzalez - a better all-around 1B than Fielder - didn't even get that much.

* I don't think Rollins is worth a 5-year deal, but 3 guaranteed with clauses that kick in and guarantee the fourth and fifth years with certain plate-appearance metrics is entirely logical for a player of his caliber.

There honestly couldn't be a more fitting avatar than Ray Ratto for this guy. It's so perfect that I think it's a joke account. If it is, it's hilarious. If it isn't, I hope he educates himself. Otherwise, we have a borderline Tito situation.

There really is so much fail in the post you have to wonder if it's not tongue in cheek.

Dude we won the World Series :bounce: I could give a shit about what happened before then! The only way I'd be pissed is if they pulled a Florida Marlins and sold everyone off.

Tzill is right when fucking Zito and fucking Rowand come off the books we'll be in a pretty good spot to get some good players. If at that point they screw the pooch and sign, say, like a fucking Rowand and a fucking Zito, I will be at the head of the :lm:

Get 'em IHD!

I have one question: The Giants gave every indication that they were willing to try to re-sign Carlos Beltran. Everyone knows the dollar amounts that would have taken - even on a 3-year deal.

So now that Sabean has gone and acquired better outfielders like Melky and Pagan, where is the money that was set aside for Beltran?*

*The first guy who says it was put into raises for other players gets his avatar kneecapped by an internet lead pipe.

Faulty premise. They were "open" to it, but once it got past two years plus an option, the Giants were out of contention. I don't think we were ever REALLY into trying to get CarBel. We "moved on" early December, before a market had been even set for him.

There never was "money set aside for Beltran" IMO.

I suspect the whole point of your post is a variation on the "ownership is cheap" meme, though.

One more thing: Those of you who are still listening to KNBR get what you deserve. The ONLY time that station should be on is when the Giants are playing or when you cannot watch an NFL game because you're traveling and want to hear the game.

If you voluntarily listen to Ralph or Radnich or Damon Douche or the Warrior guy who is on in midday, you are only hurting yourself. Go find a better diversion like methamphetamine use or mumbly peg with blind people or trying to cross the freeway while walking on your hands.

KNBR blows ass.

Rep....if it weren't for the interviews I'd ignore it altogether.

Wow. That's fucking cogent insight there.

Alert the media, we have a new MLB writer.

Check out TIPs' profile....and his posts. He's a concern troll. The Ratto icon is probably b/c he identifies. I'm not sure he's tongue in cheek.

No. I was honestly wondering if there was still money to be spent. I am in agreement with people that $130 mil should be plenty.

But I guess I was hoping that, like previous regimes, there is still wiggle room in case a good deal presented itself. And I am seriously hoping that Rollins does become available at a price the Giants will like because I don't think that Stamos has the bat to succeed in the bigs yet. Hell, even Furcal for one year with an option for a second year would be a step up IMO. Give Stamos a whole year in Triple-A and bring him up if (when) Furcal goes down.

But Rollins for 3 years with an option for the fourth would be a very nice win for SF.

If this is done, Melky Cabrera and Freddie Sanchez are immediately put into the running for the best number 8 hitter in the NL Award.

He's like Cazic, but with (give or take) 2000 fewer words per post.

Can you imagine (and yes you hf's, I know it's not going to happen)?

1.) Rollins - SS
2.) Pagan - CF
3.) Sandoval - 3B
4.) Posey - C
5.) Huff - 1B
6.) Sanchez - 2B
7.) Cabrera/Belt - LF
8.) Schierholtz - RF

Good point. Given that (unlikely) scenario, Nate is probably the better choice in the 8 slot. Fuck, filo. I thought you only knew hockey. :brick:

This is my thinking exactly. Consider them dead weight, subtract 32 million from the payroll, whatddya know, we have money to spend.

I think the thing that troubles at least me, and probably others is the willingness to throw money at Willie effing Bloomquist and apparently not show much interest in retaining Carlos. I know that may not be the case but still...

Did anyone ever find out out with certainty when our last payment on the stadium is?

I don't think any of us are big fans of Tim Kawakami, but he shared some interesting arguments/facts in his Dec. 7th article. Well, interesting enough to be discussed on here anyway. Here are the highlights:

The Giants have failed to add a truly significant bat up to this point of the winter, and what they’ve added doesn’t look like it will change much about the worst offense in baseball. Melky Cabrera? Angel Pagan? Not largely different than what the Giants put out there on the OF in 2011.

The biggest outside names were totally out of the Giants’ reach and even the middle-run names (Michael Cuddyer, Josh Willingham) seem wholly unlikely. Which is not what fans want to hear from a franchise that sold out every seat in the house last season.

You can argue that the Giants are rolling in dough and that ownership surely can afford to lift the payroll above $130M without too much sweat. But ownership can point out that $130M is a lift over last year, and that last year was a major lift over the almost $100M World Series payroll, which even then was in the top third of baseball’s financial tier.

You can argue that the Giants owners seem to be more interested in keeping their dividends flowing than going full-out for victory, and you would be right.

This ownership group is dedicated to keeping the Giants’ pitching core together, and it knows that this will take a lot of money for now and for the future. They’re not going on a spending spree. They’re letting the payroll move up, but not into the stratosphere.

And it’s Angel Pagan and Melky Cabrera as the big additions for 2012. That’s just the way it is sometimes, even for the richer half.
