They signed Kobe to 2 more years crippling their salary cap.

This almost ensures they will be incapable to sign top FAs to build and that they will need to build through the draft.

That is actually perfect.

They can afford 1st 3 year max contracts with Kobe's salary.

Since their contract situation ensures they will not be able to bring in top talent that would help them win right now they effectively are tanking while maintaining a fan base and also repaying Kobe for all the seats he has sold over the years.

Or maybe since they only have the 2014 1st rounder and they can not sign anybody until that offseason anyways it would have been better to pay Kobe closer to market value so that they could bring in a star and still have that draft...

That's not completely true though - and even though I think Buss could have done better and smarter, it's not a disaster either if Kobe comes back and is healthy. You are forgetting that Gasol's salary comes off the book this summer, so the only salaries on board now for 2014 is Nash and Kobe to equal 33 million, which would leave them with 30 million for two major signings. How would this work

By talking both free agents into taking less money in the first year to be under the cap and load them up on the future years so they avoid that repetive tax. The only one that will untouchable for the Lakers is Lebron James and I never considered that a possibility. On the other hand, they can wait to resign Gasol as a free agent and wait until after those signings and then excercise those free bird rights.

As far as I am concerned - Farmar - Young - Meeks and Henry should be resigned now already and are keepers. The only reason they didn't want to wait on Kobe to do the same is because they didn't want to send the wrong message to the other free agents out there.

Now one potential is Carmelo Anthony an

And one more thing - the Lakers could waive Nash and spread his salary against the cap over three years, so that would mean Kobe at 23 million plus Nash at 3.5 million to equal 26 million and 26 left to work with depending on the salary cap next season.

If we resign Pau it has to be for considerably less, he's more of a roleplayer a lot of nights.

Kobe took a huge cut of 7 million a year which sets the precedent and example for Gasol to do the same. If Gasol takes a slash down to even 11.5 to 12 million - the Lakers duo that brought them two championship is still there and with a player like Carmelo Anthony - they would be a potential threat

they're smarter than all of us when it comes to finances

you'll look the fool when the team ratches being a contender in a year

fuck the draft having seen how the blueprint we've used past 15 years has netted us 5 titles

How will they sign them? They can sign 1 in '14 before they are back over the cap with Kobe, Nash and that max player. In '15 Nash's $9m comes off but you will still need 13 other players?

Your owner has a Mullet and is best friends with a guy named Chaz.

They still will likely be in better shape than the HEAT in 2 years.

Even if the Heat are nothing this is doubtful.

The Lakers will in fact be better positioned than the HEAT in 2 years.
It is not even debatable.

The LAKERS will have Kobe as the only player under contract in 2 years.
They will only have 35 million committed next season for that matter.

The HEAT will be saddled with the big contracts of Wade, Bosh, and Haslem.
Those are older players (Bosh) or much older/often injured players (Wade/Haslem).

Unless they lose their freaking minds, there is 0% chance any of them turn down the player options. Bosh, Wade, and Haslem are not that stupid.

They would get paid pennies elsewhere if they opted out. SO, they will take the big Miami money.

That essentially cripples the HEAT until 2017 at the earliest before they can add salary.

LA might not be idea for the future.
But, it looks 10 times better than the disastrous future the HEAT are facing.

Lakers have always used the draft. Heck how do you think they obtained Magic, Kareem, Worthy and Kobe.

They either drafted them or gave away high draft picks to get them.

misinterpreted, totally agree that the Lakers will have more cap space.

I do not see Wade still being on the Heat in 2 years, I think he retires or hopefully takes a pay cut.

If the Heat still have Bosh and LBJ despite those 2 being old they will still have a decent team.
