I like your beard.
Jason Kenney just confirmed the soldier has died from his wounds.
After seeing the video of chest compressions I wasn't too hopeful

In regard to the first round sounding high powered: reports I've seen said the shooter in Parliament had a gun with a long barrel (so, sniper).

Hardly does it mean sniper. Could be a shotgun, AR style weapon, or something like a 30-30 even. I don't see why anyone would go into a building with a long distance rifle when they are limited capacity and slow to shoot. Not saying it wasn't a high powered rifle but long barreled gun could be numerous types of weapons.
The Leafs are staying at the Westin Hotel connected to Rideau Centre, thus the worried tone from players to reporters. They're watching this all from their hotel windows.

The alert was actually raised last week, prior to Quebec. They just didn't publicize it until yesterday.
I'm in Ottawa but not downtown. My building is in lockdown anyway. My wife and I have a three month old daughter that we've been toting around the city to all the landmarks... always felt very safe in any Canadian city but this might shake that a bit. Very upsetting and sad for the soldier who was shot. Hope they are okay.
Any news from the Rideau center? I have friends who work there.

It was apparently a shotgun recovered from the first shooter. Heck of an echo inside. Thought for sure it was a major hunting/sniper weapon.
I just read that. I think it's kinda cool that the alert system is not public. But also kind of worrysome.
Glad you're okay.
And I know it's easy for me to say, but don't let this incident shake your confidence in the safety of your city. That's what the people who do this kind of thing want from you. I've only been there twice, but Ottawa is a great city. That whole area is beautiful.
By the way, got a text from my buddy. He's inside and locked down. He can see Parliament Hill from his office and the Rideau Center from around the corner inside his building. The rumo(u)r spreading in his building is the second shooter ran to the Mall to hide and the shots fired were the Police getting him. Obviously not confirmed. Let's hope.

If the shooter did indeed have a sniper riffle, perhaps he wanted to get up to the top of the Peace Tower?

In the comment section of a CNN post about the situation in Ottawa -->> "Canada has a war memorial? When did they go to war?"
It's been a while since I went to Ottawa, but I have serious concerns about how this prick managed to get into the building. My company did restoration work at Queens Park (Ontario's Legislature) and the security we had to go through to enter the building when we had to was pretty strict. You'd think it would be airtight at Parliament Hill, especially considering this isn't the first time a plot to commit terrorist acts there has been conceived since 9/11.
