In regard to the first round sounding high powered: reports I've seen said the shooter in Parliament had a gun with a long barrel (so, sniper).

Hardly does it mean sniper. Could be a shotgun, AR style weapon, or something like a 30-30 even. I don't see why anyone would go into a building with a long distance rifle when they are limited capacity and slow to shoot. Not saying it wasn't a high powered rifle but long barreled gun could be numerous types of weapons.

I admit to knowing jack crap about weapons.

The Leafs are staying at the Westin Hotel connected to Rideau Centre, thus the worried tone from players to reporters. They're watching this all from their hotel windows.

I just stayed at the Westin Ottawa six weeks ago and had and the views from there were incredible- you can see pretty much everything except the front entrance to Centre Block. I routinely watched the soldiers at the War Memorial from the hotel window march back and forth.

It was apparently a shotgun recovered from the first shooter. Heck of an echo inside. Thought for sure it was a major hunting/sniper weapon.

The alert was actually raised last week, prior to Quebec. They just didn't publicize it until yesterday.

I just read that. I think it's kinda cool that the alert system is not public. But also kind of worrysome.

I'm in Ottawa but not downtown. My building is in lockdown anyway. My wife and I have a three month old daughter that we've been toting around the city to all the landmarks... always felt very safe in any Canadian city but this might shake that a bit. Very upsetting and sad for the soldier who was shot. Hope they are okay.

Any news from the Rideau center? I have friends who work there.

Glad you're okay.

And I know it's easy for me to say, but don't let this incident shake your confidence in the safety of your city. That's what the people who do this kind of thing want from you. I've only been there twice, but Ottawa is a great city. That whole area is beautiful.

By the way, got a text from my buddy. He's inside and locked down. He can see Parliament Hill from his office and the Rideau Center from around the corner inside his building. The rumo(u)r spreading in his building is the second shooter ran to the Mall to hide and the shots fired were the Police getting him. Obviously not confirmed. Let's hope.

I don't think it will affect me so much, but my wife's maternal instincts have really kicked in. I don't want her worried about taking our baby around the city.

If the shooter did indeed have a sniper riffle, perhaps he wanted to get up to the top of the Peace Tower?

Is it possible that the shooter from the War Memorial ran toward Rideau Center?

Oh, nevermind, 43 said that. Just saw the map and see that they're near each other.

One of the press guys who was in caucus, being moved around all AM, said that they heard the police worried about a shooter on top of the building.

It's been a while since I went to Ottawa, but I have serious concerns about how this prick managed to get into the building. My company did restoration work at Queens Park (Ontario's Legislature) and the security we had to go through to enter the building when we had to was pretty strict. You'd think it would be airtight at Parliament Hill, especially considering this isn't the first time a plot to commit terrorist acts there has been conceived since 9/11.

In the comment section of a CNN post about the situation in Ottawa -->> "Canada has a war memorial? When did they go to war?"

Comments like this piss me off to no end.

Being American, I take what I read in comment sections with a grain of salt, since those pose lots of hatred and ignorance.

CBC saying that military members are told to not wear uniform off-base, and on base don't make any stops before going home. In other words: don't wear it in public. Just because they're being targeted. Sickening.

#Vancouver police responding to a report of a male carrying an AR15 style rifle near 71st and Granville St. Area search underway.

Immediate reaction of mine to this was just saying no over and over.

BC legislature security received "information" from Ottawa authorities a few days ago to be on a more aware footing, Clerk Craig James says.

Curious about that, too, although early reports are that one carjacked a vehicle and breached perimeter security then went into the building blasting and was quickly subdued (which matches reports of a Parliament Security Guard being hit). While that was going on, a second guy ran towards the building on foot and that's the one they are looking for on the other side of the canal.

Has their been any information whether this was a terrorist/ISIS motivated incident, or anti government? Or something else? I reckon there's a lot if speculation but anything confirmed?
