Leafs are downtown, too. RT @Citizenkwarren: Joe Bowen told Hockey Central that players have been told to stay in their rooms.

they knew/know stuff is coming

Probably more in reaction to the Quebec Incident than any specific knowledge of this or some other event. Canada would surely have taken steps to protect exposed soldiers guarding a memorial if they had specific info.

Holy shit. That first shot sounded like a high powered rifle. Like a sniper rifle.

The rest sounds small arms and a lot of it return fire.

Is now the time for an 'I told you so' political statement?

To some people, it always is agenda time. And to some people hunting soldiers and police is "justified". Those people are... use your own adjective.

my friends husband is working in the middle of that area. she said he contacted her but didnt hear shots its crazy.

I have a friend who works across the canal and up the street from Rideau Centre. Haven't heard from him yet. Fingers Crossed.

 This fucking country.

Pretty typical. The guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Beefeaters at Buckingham palace do not have active weapons, either.

I think Kenny is out west. Dacks and Urkie (wherever he's been) are in that area I think. And if you remember drunkencanadian from the swamp he works across the canal from the hill. Haven't heard from him yet.

In regard to the first round sounding high powered: reports I've seen said the shooter in Parliament had a gun with a long barrel (so, sniper).

The alert was actually raised last week, prior to Quebec. They just didn't publicize it until yesterday.

Did not know that. Guessing they're all getting some live rounds after this.

I'm in Ottawa but not downtown. My building is in lockdown anyway. My wife and I have a three month old daughter that we've been toting around the city to all the landmarks... always felt very safe in any Canadian city but this might shake that a bit. Very upsetting and sad for the soldier who was shot. Hope they are okay.

Any news from the Rideau center? I have friends who work there.

The Leafs are staying at the Westin Hotel connected to Rideau Centre, thus the worried tone from players to reporters. They're watching this all from their hotel windows.

It was probably a hunting rifle of some sort. It's much easier to get one of those here than any other firearm, although of course we have no idea how these people got their weapons.

A lot of what I've heard was that they misinterpreted the shots there. That it was nearby, but not IN the mall.
