I don't think Nashville can walk away, can they (team is bound by the arbitrator's award because they elected to take Weber to arbitration, unless I'm mistaken)

/edit: confirmed by a faster and younger jstew above (haha)

Rinne & Suter will be unrestricted free agents next offseason. Preds need to lock them up long-term.

Seems like going to abitration is like going through a divorce, always bad feelings after it's over. They low balled him pretty good so I wonder if they will ever kiss and make up.

Me thinks the Preds are caught in the spiders Web.

Taking a step back, according to the reports, Weber wanted $8.5M, so it wasn't a TOTAL loss for the Preds.

Could this prove to be a smart move long term? As was noted previously, Weber does not become a UFA after next season, so the Preds get a freebie arbitration out of it essentially. They now have an independent source that has set his value that they can use as a benchmark in the negotiations.

Then again, he may be so pissed about the low-balling that he refuses to sign with them.

I mentioned it earlier, I think $7.5 mil is fair. He would have been the most sought after player if he was an UFA this year.

That is what I believe will happen and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Weber traded at or near the trade deadline next season.

I think the last sentence is teh most relevant. I dont think there is anything considered a freebie especially when you go in and try to convice someone why your star isnt worth anything.

but his base salary going into next summer's negotiations is going to be $7.5 million (as opposed to negotiating from $4.5m base this year)
are they going to ask him to take a pay cut for a long term deal?

next summer has some VERY tough questions for NSH owners
Weber RFA again, Suter UFA, Rinne UFA.

talk about pressure. who do you lock in first? still gotta be Weber, methinks.
but then you set the number to work off of for the other two.

This is true, but only while using this years production numbers and success, or lack there of, in the playoffs as a base for his performance as well. IF he has a year that has his production dip to say 80% of what it was last year and the preds miss the playoffs, the Preds could very easily win another arbitration case for $6-$6.5 million.

That's a very dangerous game to play, though, especially with the captain of the team (who is already pretty frosted I assume when the team put his value at almost $3 million less than what an arbitrator has ruled).
