no last minute deal

Bruce Dowbiggin was saying (no idea how he knows) the 2 sides are going in to arbitration with the following demand:

Weber: wants 8 mill per
Preds: offering 4.5 per (???)

so its looking like a 1 year deal ... somewhere in the middle???

and Shea will be UFA next year :)

Yikes, that's a pretty big gap. Preds are lowballing pretty hard so this arbitration could get ugly if they're trying to justify 4.5 million.

I think in all honesty he will receive around $6 million.

Drew Doughty will be paying close attention to this arbitration hearing...

yah ... this has a chance to not end well for the Preds ... instead of ripping Webers game they should probably just beg the arbitrator to keep the figure below 7 million

I think 7 mil is a reasonable number for Weber. He leads a team of no-names into the playoffs each year. I can't think of a better d-man in the league, to be honest. Only a couple of guys as good as him.

If that 4.5 is accurate, I think the Preds are making a mistake trying to lowball him. If I were him I would find that offer insulting.

And then I would sign with the Sharks.

first time in NHL history that a team-elected arbitration has gone to hearing.
UFA next year, nashville just fucked up big time.

Preds need to lock him up forever. He is the beard of the franchise.

Are you implying the Predators are gay?

no, they changed their arena name before it stuck.

update on his status though (from CapGeek).

Correcting our earlier tweet, Shea Weber will be an RFA in 2012 if he is re-signed to a one-year deal.
In 2005-06, Weber was nine games short of the 40 required to give him a seventh accrued season. He was on the active roster for 31.

so this one is kind of a freebie for Nashville.

If only the franchise tag was in play...

Darren Pang has different #'s than Dowbiggin but in the same ball park

If Preds offer to Weber was $4.7 M and he asked for $8.5M , what does he end up with?

I understand the need to low ball a bit in any good negotiation, but $4.5 (or $4.7) is a ridiculous low ball for a top 3 in the league D man.

He's worth upwards of $7 million per in this market. I might even go as high as 7.5.

I would. He's in the top 3 at his position. If Kovy and B-Rich can get above the 7 mil mark, I don't see why he can't. He's better at his position.

anybody think the preds would take timo and hartnell back for him? (keep in mind hartnell is the 11th best left wing in the league :L)

Good article by Friedman

Predators in trouble with Weber? - Elliotte Friedman

Look over the past few years and see how many players who have gone through the hearing remained long-term afterwards.

Campoli with Ottawa: traded.
Antti Niemi (Chicago): walked away.
Tim Kennedy (Buffalo): walked away.
Clarke MacArthur (Atlanta): walked away.
Blake Wheeler (Boston): traded.
Roberto Luongo was traded one year after his ugly hearing.

Now, Nashville's not walking away from Weber, but the trend is alarming -- particularly since he had to hear how he deserves to be the 26th-highest paid defencemen next season.

There's a reason both sides try hard to avoid this process.

How stupid does Atlanta look now? Before he was let go Dudley said he was looking to add a top 6 forward. MacArthur would have fit the part. The Thrashers just didn't know it at the time.

I think Weber's decision has more to do with wanting to win. He knows what the restraints are in Nashville. I'm sure he's noticed how inactive Poile has been this offseason. They lost Ward to the Caps. For a team desparate for offense that's a huge loss.

How about Weber to the Caps for Semin?
