Bold move by the Flyers, but nothing wrong with it IMO. The RFA offer sheets are in the CBA, deal with it. The only thing holding the Predators up from matching right now is the amount of cash in the first year.... that's a lot for their team.

On the other side, I don't know the Flyers contract / cap situation, but isn't Giroux due a big raise sometime soon? Will they struggle to find the space or is it pretty much a non-issue?

Giroux is making 3.75 this year and next and then he is a RFA. And yes, he'll be due a big raise at that time.

and timonen (6.5) is in his last year now.. fairly safe to assume that most of his money will go to giroux (in addition to his 3.75).. but giroux will be RFA at that time too.. so that normally keeps the price down a little

Maybe a little RFA poaching then? I hear the Wild spend well.

So, when do the Flyers go after Jay Bouwmeester once the Preds match?

yes, there is a way NSH/PHI could trade if Preds decided not to match -- it involves the draft picks.
In 1995, STL signed Shayne Corson to an offer sheet. EDM traded back the picks for Curtis Joseph and Mike Grier.
In 1997, Flyers signed Chris Gratton from Tampa, then traded Mikael Renberg and Karl Dykhuis to reacquire the picks.

I find a few things wrong with it. Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm jumping up and down and left and right at the mere thought that Weber might one day potentially be a Flyer, but I'm trying to keep perspective here.

One: The Flyers (my team, I remind you) are basically using signing bonuses to attempt to strongarm a smaller market team out of a player. The problem for Nashville isn't a 7.5 million cap hit - they are way under the floor and won't have an issue with that. The problem is that they might not have $27 million in signing bonuses readily available, whereas the Flyers clearly have money to burn.

Two: Using signing bonuses to skip the salary can't decrease rule, which I'm 99% sure applies here, the 1% remaining only because I haven't SEEN the actual terms. I got pissed at the Wild for doing it with Parisuter, and I'm not that happy with it happening here, either, especially in combination with the first part.

Three: I dislike that the RFA compensation is the total contract over the first five years of the deal - that is stupid and dumb. I could see it being the first five years of compensation totaled and divided by five or the total contract divided by the total years, whichever is HIGHER, in order to protect the team with the rights, but no reason to punish a team for offering more than five years, which is essentially what they are doing right now.

Four: I don't like that Nashville will probably match it. :(

I'm starting to think I don't want him on the Flyers. Can you imagine the league the night after Weber slams SIDNEY CROSBY face-first into the glass?

Oh, wait, back to wanting him on my team again.

#Predators David Poile will match #Flyers offer to Weber according to several sources in Pred's management. Stay tuned...

Well, I suppose he'll be a Flyer now.
