I agree with the bold in so much as Ed Snider is so close to Bettman (as his broadcasting partner) and wields enormous power in shaping the next cba ... ie are they operating and have they structured this deal with insider information of what owners will be heading towards next season and beyond.

Also the poison pill aspect of the signing bonuses ... Snider most likely gained or had access to insider information on Preds financial foundation through BOG meetings ... did the organization use this in shaping the structure of the deal?

Precisely. They have to know something the rest of us don't. Snider and Holmer look like geniuses here. They may not be popular for it, but they sure pushed an opponent to the brink.

The Preds will keep Weber or get the 1sts. I dont see any other negotiation working.

If Poile wants Weber, fine. Matched, done.

If Poile is looking to trade Weber from this contract, then it is because he financially can not keep him. You do not look to trade the best dman in the league who is locked at a great hit for 14 years. If Poile says "Yeah we wont match, just give us Schenn." Homer better know to call his bluff.

and to even things out on my supposed "conspiracy theory"

Ill bet Preds ownership will be pushing hard to have the ability to trade players and have a portion of salary/cash coming back the other way in return included in this new CBA

I think there are several other teams that would like that option as well, jstew.

What's the other option? Sit out for a year? My impression is that matching an offer sheet blocks the players choice.

I think JStew was implying that Weber might not play his best for Nashville and/or might start making waves in the locker room if he is retained, which is NOT what you want the guy getting paid $20+ million a year to do.

Man, I'm liking this more and more. If Philly gets him, we get a stud dman forever at the cost of four likely low first round gambles. If Nashville signs him, we lose nothing but the opportunity to pay EVEN MORE next year and deny him to every other Eastern team.

I'm worried about the Preds though - they basically cannot win more than one of the fans, money, and Weber arguments.

If they sign and keep him, their fans are happy, but owners pay a ton and Weber is pissed.

If they sign him and trade him, their fans are pissed and owners pay that HUGE first year, but Weber is happy.

If they don't sign him, Weber is happy, but the fans are LIVID and the owners know they could have gotten more.

yup theyll definitely have other owners in their corner

but I dont think it is as crucial to any other team as it might be with the Preds considering no other team will have paid 26 mill in a calendar year to 1 player in signing bonuses (and would like a shot at recouping some of that)

not sure if posted yet

Won't spent much time scouring for Weber trade details, but I've heard Preds wanted Couturier, Schenn and something else from Flyers. Ouch.

Darren Dreger ‏@DarrenDreger
Preds didn't have a ton of time to make a trade, but they did know of the Weber offer sheet Wed morning. Trade talk consumed most of the day

If this is true Philly did the right thing. Giving up the draft picks is peanuts compared to the players Nashville wants. The Flyers will contend for the cup for years to come.

Philadelphia made $52-million in ticket revenue last REGULAR season. Nashville $26-mil.

Nah, that would be boring, too.

This just seems overblown is all.

Nashville likely matches, so I think this is a lot of much ado about nothing. If they don't, Philly is paying an obscene amount of money for a defense that still isn't near the top and loses 4 1st round picks. Even if they are near the bottom, that is a big deal, despite everyone acting like it isn't. Even if you don't get a 1st line center, you get EL contracts for good players and that is very important to your cap.

short list??? does this mean Shea ASKED for a trade before this all went down?

Katie Strang ‏@KatieStrangESPN
#NYR Rangers were also on Shea Weber's short list; d-man RFA visited NY recently, ESPN NY has learned. Story to come

Katie Strang ‏@KatieStrangESPN
#NYR Weber liked NYR org -- ownership, hockey ops, coaching -- but prospect of living in Manhattan was main deterrent
