Even if the Preds don't want to pay up the entirety of that contract though...they have to get more in return. Losing him for late first rounders? Not enough. Just not enough.

Probably not, but it's now four late first rounders and the $26 million they'd save not paying for the first year versus the trade return and his services for a year. To a small market team, that cash is not a small consideration.

I agree, and I think as a fan of a team with ownership that wouldn't blush at that it's harder for me to see the importance, but from a hockey standpoint, if they want to be competitive, they have to sign him. His services alone are worth more than 4 firsts, and we all know he'd get a King's (heh heh) ransom in return in a trade. We're talking a few firsts, a top end prospect, at least one roster player. If I were Poile, that'd be my starting point.

Honestly, the more I think about it, Holmgren has really put the Preds over a barrel. My initial gut reaction is that they have to match the offer sheet, but without knowing their current financial situation (and future plans for Weber down the road), it is a tough call.

Heck, they could trade him to Philly in a year and get a ton more in return. I guess if I were an owner I'd see this as a must do thing. Gosh I kinda feel bad for their fanbase. They have a pretty good following, but this team could be dismantled pretty quickly.

Ed Snider is the BEST OWNER in professional sports.

As for Nashville, Poile won't be making this decision. It will be up to ownership. They know how much this is going to cost in terms of money. I think they should match it because of the reprucssions if they don't. We're going to find out how important winning is in Nashville. We're going to find out if the Predators can play with the big boys.

you would pay him 27 million dollars for 1 season?

Maybe, but $27 million for one season and then you trade the player is a pretty tough pill to swallow. I mean, you might be better off saving the $27 million and taking the four first round picks.

Edit: What jstew said above (lol)

Won't spent much time scouring for Weber trade details, but I've heard Preds wanted Couturier, Schenn and something else from Flyers. Ouch.

Preds didn't have a ton of time to make a trade, but they did know of the Weber offer sheet Wed morning. Trade talk consumed most of the day

all boils down to 3 options for the preds

1) take the 4 first rounders
2) re-work the deal to get more than the 4 first rounders from Philly
3) match and committ to Weber for life

no more of this bs about trade him after a year, 2 or even 3 with all this signing bonus money ... no way that happens

This offer sheet has two components to me. First and foremost, it's a large market team wielding it's muscle - almost thumbing down their noses at Nashville - if there wasn't revenue sharing, where would we be? Current CBA implications - this is why large market teams don't like revenue sharing very much. The other thing this reminds me of is the NBA and the soft salary cap. If these large market teams like to do things like this, then they pay a luxury tax which is revenue sharing essentially. I hope the NHL doesn't approach this as it leaves the elite few and the mediocre rest and the really shitty couple of perrenial cellar dwellers in small markets.

Second, although Nashville has been close the past couple of seasons, it just never made it. Now with one of the big three gone, where does that leave the team? Is Weber worth that much to this team? Will this deal cripple them going forward, under the current system and presumably new CBA?

The Preds are stuck - that front loaded deal is killer to them on a cash flow basis, and even a playoff series or two will barely even cover something like that. What if they don't make it that far?

The Preds blew it by electing the one year arbitration last offseason - they gambled and now Philly is going to make sure they lose - either the player or a good chunk of the ownership's cash.

I can

they match and commit to him

/the problem is does he commit to them

Weber wants out
He wants a fresh start

If the Preds match and trade him next season they just threw 27 million down the drain. Thats I think I read 16% of the value of the team.

The thing is Nashville will come out as a loser either way. If they don't match it the fan base will flip. If they do, then the team will have no money, won't be able to sign good talent, and will suck. Granted they will have a stud goalie and defenseman but it takes more than that. They are screwed. I see them worse off in the long run if they match the offer. Sucky situation for Poile. Plus, it sounds more and more like Weber doesn't want to be there. Also, Nashville matching and then trading him after a year doesn't seem like a great idea to me. After shoveling out all that money in the first year they might as well just keep him.

I agree with the bold in so much as Ed Snider is so close to Bettman (as his broadcasting partner) and wields enormous power in shaping the next cba ... ie are they operating and have they structured this deal with insider information of what owners will be heading towards next season and beyond.

Also the poison pill aspect of the signing bonuses ... Snider most likely gained or had access to insider information on Preds financial foundation through BOG meetings ... did the organization use this in shaping the structure of the deal?

What's the other option? Sit out for a year? My impression is that matching an offer sheet blocks the players choice.

the way i see it ... his option is to sulk ... thats about it

Im talking about will he commit on the ice to the franchise

if the preds match they are not going to go and trade him ... so what does that do to Weber ... because yes ... it would appear from his agent Kevin Epps comments that he wants out on Nashville
