This is the reason why Vancouver chose not to sign Shea Weber to an offer sheet as the #Preds made it very clear they would match #Canucks

the thing about it is ... Gillis admitted they were going to offer 1 year at 14 million

first ... how? (no cap space for that)
second ... it would have probably worked better than Holmgrens offer sheet structure, no?

thats what i would've thought.. although then you're giving up 4 first round picks for a guy on a 1 year contract.. which is riskier then just having the preds match

i actually think the best way to try and put nashville in a pinch would be to offer a 1 year, 7.4 hit.. or whatever was right under the 4 first round.. then nashville has to choose between either taking the compensation, or risking that he leaves for nothing next summer.. they'd probably match, but then it'd be open season next summer

Ouch. Way to dig that we haven't won the cup in a while. I mean, that's so cold you could use it as a heatsink for your giant laser.

:D

My lab is getting a new laser, and we made a choice today on which company to use, which means we have to let the sales rep from the other company that we're not buying theirs, and I volunteered to send the email as the coldest, most unfeeling member of the group. :)

if the flyers got weber for hartnell and timonen i would be jumping for joy too?

clearly the preds didn't think they could come to terms with hartnell and timonen, so they got what they could for them before they entered unrestricted free agency (much different than RFA)

i'm not saying timonen and hartnell are just worth a 1st rounder.. but the preds got a 1st round pick for 2 players that had about a week left in the tenure as predators

when have you ever seen a UFA in late june get traded for more than a draft pick or two?

You do realize the Flyers were very confident they could sign both players before they made the trade right?

I think Weber wanted a long term deal so he could sneak in before the CBA. If he was going to do a one year deal Nashville would have already signed him to one. And I think we wanted to make sure that he never hit the market at all, because odds are we would have lost him to the Pens or Rangers. I don't think it was a bad idea to offer sheet him, honestly. Would have preferred to get him, but at least this way he can piss off the Wings instead of the Flyers.

I hope you went with the Parsons laser and have titled your experiment as the Allan Parsons project...

Don't worry awaz Travis Hamonic will be a RFA next summer. He's not as good as Weber is, but he's younger & has a lot of potential. As an added bonus Chuck is EXTREMELY CHEAP so the chances the Isles would match are probably very low.

that's exactly it. He would have had his choice of destination next year (Vancouver, of course!!), but there was risk that these monster deals will be closed down by the new CBA (term limits, etc).
He went for the money, as it may have been his last opportunity to lock in for this amount/term.

And now, he can buy his hometown of Sicamous, B.C. (or at least a good chunk of it).

I don't blame him one bit. What his agent said about not wanting Nashville to match was bush league, but I'm not about to blame the player for signing a long term contract Philly will find somebody else. If the rest of the league didn't think Philly means business, they do now.

Philly has shown for years now that it means business. The Pronger trade. The Bryz signing. We are always in the mix when it comes to the top free agents and trade rumors. I love my team and how they are always striving to improve.

But as much as I love 'em, that doesn't mean SHIT until the sixteenth win. I think we've got an okay shot this year. I really wish we'd have won the last two.

The offseason isn't over yet. I expect both Pennsylvania teams to make moves before opening night.

Well ya when you pay them what they flyers paid them anyone would sign (see briere, Daniel). Theoretically though they should have had no idea if they'd sign though or it would have been tampering.

Still doesn't take away the 'you're not going to sign them so why would I give you anything more' argument.

I think in many instances it comes down to reputation & how players/agents perceive teams. The Flyers are very well thought of around the league. The Weber signing will only improve their standing amongst players & agents. On the other hand the Islanders can't even make a trade without having the player go to arbitration in an attempt to void it.

Yeah, it really sucks that an old powerhouse franchise like the Isles is treated like that. One of these years they'll get it together though, and maybe we'll see a real playoff run out of them.

Which the Flyers will CRUSH in the conference finals en route to winning their 8th straight Cup. The same Cup in which I will score my 50th goal of the playoffs and it will be the championship goal, and then as the hundreds of ladies who are attracted to my rugged good looks and sparkling personality (but who are indifferent towards the $14,000,000 salary I make as the Flyers captain) descend upon me, my dad will watch from the stands and say, "I'm proud of you, son. I love you."

I love you too, Dad. I love you too.
