That would depend on what Poile believes he can recieve via trade as opposed to the four late 1st round picks from Philly. I don't believe financials are as big of an issue in Nashville as they used to be. Especially after they signed a soon to be 30 year old goalie for $7m a year. Weber is a franchise dman who can be moved for assets much more significant that what they will recieve from the offer sheet.

i absolutely agree they can get more than 4 first round picks, but if finances weren't a problem, why not match immediately? the flyers aren't gunna up the offer, and holding on to this really doesn't hinder the flyers offseason at all.. they're waiting to sign voracek, aside from that and this w/ weber, i doubt they wanna do anything else.. a trade for ryan (or nash if you still believe the flyers are in on that), will still be around in a week

Webers agent on with cybulski saying theyd prefer that the preds didnt match

It makes you wonder how much work Weber's agent did behind the scenes crafting this scenario to aid his client. I mean, maybe he put the bug in Holmgren's ear and they worked out the financials together with Snider.
whoa. strong words, and makes for an awkward moment in the dressing room if (when) they match.

largely principal of the matter.
- make the Flyers sweat a little bit
- lock up those Flyer draft picks for the entire week because, why wouldn't you.
- take some time to see if Weber is going to be a bitch if he comes back.

Weber's agent Jarrett Bousquet confirms on Primetime Sports that Shea did in fact visit with 5 teams....NYR,Det,SJ,Van and Phila.

Poile is going to want to talk to Weber and his agent before matching. While I believe the Preds financials are much improved since getting rid of "Boots" and bringing in a couple more reliable investors this is still something Poile will have to discuss with ownership. To put it into perspective last season Nashville spent a little over $52.1m on actual salaries. If they choose to accept the offer sheet it will put them at just under $56m with two spots left to fill according to capgeek. Overall they are only looking at adding approx $8m to the actual payroll.

Will they match the offer? I don't know, but really there is no benifit to matching it right a way if they choose to.

Why, yes, I would say that spending 10% of your net worth on one guy in one year is definitely one of those things you might want to maybe sort of mention to ownership.

That said, thanks for clarifying what Nashville actually spent last year - that's going to be very helpful for estimating what they might have on hand or quickly in terms of affording the key first few years here.

Losing Suter & Weber in the same offseason would set the Predators franchise back BIG TIME. To make matters worse all they would get back is 4 1st round draft picks. Not one single NHL player, Not a single top prospect who could help them this season. Sorry, but I really don't think Nashville has a choice here. Think of the message it would send to the fans if they let Weber walk. I think Nashville has to match the offersheet.

the way i see it ... his option is to sulk ... thats about it

Im talking about will he commit on the ice to the franchise

if the preds match they are not going to go and trade him ... so what does that do to Weber ... because yes ... it would appear from his agent Kevin Epps comments that he wants out on Nashville

Weber's agent Jarrett Bousquet confirms on Primetime Sports that Shea did in fact visit with 5 teams....NYR,Det,SJ,Van and Phila.

I see the problem now, Weber has too many agents spoiling the soup...

Not even the fans - it tells potential future free agents that they aren't interested in winning. This is a sport where the Islanders offered to trade every draft pick they had for the year to move up TWO SLOTS. Draft picks are gambles, and odds aren't great to get somebody like Weber, especially when you would be drafting where the Flyers would if Nashville doesn't match. I can see this ending in a trade - the Preds don't match but trade Philly back one or more firsts for NHL ready players - but I really don't see Nashville letting the Flyers walk with Weber for four pulls of a slot machine.

(That said please Nashville, let the Flyers walk with Weber for four pulls of a slot machine.)

I don't see Philly trading away any assets on their roster for Weber at this point & their prospect pool isn't very good. This is why Weber was given the offersheet. Giving up 1st round picks is much better than giving up guys like Couturier & Schenn.

It amazes me how many people here DON'T think this way. It's a no brainer. People are trying to make for 1st round picks seem like a lot, but when you're team is as young as us, we can afford to do that to fill the ONE GLARING HOLE on our roster.

Please don't match. pretty please.

The Preds have to match. Philly is going to be good for a while, those first round picks might not even pan out to be NHL players. If I'm Poile, I wait until the last minute to match, then I trade him to the Rangers, Devils, or Pens as soon as the year expires.

Nah, as somebody else put it, that's paying about a quarter of the contract for about 8% of the duration. Probably not a great idea for a mid-market team. Plus the fans would MURDER Poile unless the return was Crosby, which the Pens sure as hell won't do.

I expect he'll wait about six days, 23 hours to make his decision though...

i just dont understand this sentiment.. why trade him if you get him locked up? and more importantly, why trade him after you pay 25% of the contract after the first year?

If Shea Weber wanted out so bad, why did he sign an offer sheet that basically forces Nashville to match and keep him? Did he really think they were going to let him go for some mediocre draft picks? Not really sure what his agent was telling him. Sounds like the advice an NFL wide receiver's agent/cousin would give.
